In Lahore, eyes were on the pitch following the toss of the Pakistan–Australia Twenty20 International earlier today. According to Pakistani media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had planned to unveil the team’s official T20 World Cup kit at the Gaddafi Stadium after the toss. However, the ceremony did not take place as expected.
Geo News reported that the PCB had decided to postpone the jersey unveiling due to “unavoidable circumstances.” The exact reasons remain unclear, though sources suggest that concerns over security and the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) perceived double standards may have influenced the decision. There has been speculation in Pakistan about a potential boycott of the World Cup, and the jersey issue emerged amid these tensions.
A PCB source told Geo News that the unveiling was scheduled after the toss of the second T20I in the Pakistan–Australia series. “Due to unavoidable circumstances, the ceremony has been deferred,” the source said.
In the past, security concerns had prompted venue changes in India–Pakistan fixtures. This time, however, Pakistan has criticised the ICC for adopting a different approach in Bangladesh, where the governing body did not allow matches to be relocated despite similar concerns. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Pakistan is reconsidering its participation in the World Cup, with a final decision expected on Monday.
Pakistan is slated to begin its World Cup campaign on 7 February against the Netherlands. The team has been drawn in Group A alongside long-standing rivals India, as well as the United States and Namibia. All of Pakistan’s matches will be held in Colombo. On 25 January, the PCB selectors announced a 15-member squad for the tournament. Regarding participation, selector Aqib Javed clarified, “It is our responsibility to select the team; whether Pakistan plays or not is a board decision.”
The confirmed 15-member squad is as follows:
| No. | Player Name | Role |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Babar Azam | Captain/Batsman |
| 2 | Shaheen Afridi | Bowler |
| 3 | Haris Rauf | All-rounder |
| 4 | Fakhar Zaman | Batsman |
| 5 | Mohammad Rizwan | Wicketkeeper/Batsman |
| 6 | Shadab Khan | All-rounder |
| 7 | Fawad Alam | Batsman |
| 8 | Mohammad Nawaz | Bowler |
| 9 | Mohammad Haris | Batsman |
| 10 | Imam-ul-Haq | Batsman |
| 11 | Hasan Ali | Bowler |
| 12 | Rashid Khan (Dep.) | Bowler |
| 13 | Asif Ali | Batsman |
| 14 | Sharjeel Khan | Batsman |
| 15 | Yasir Shah | Bowler |
Meanwhile, Bangladesh will not be participating in this year’s T20 World Cup. Despite the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requesting that matches scheduled in India be relocated to Sri Lanka over security concerns, the ICC did not approve the change. Scotland has been included in place of Bangladesh in the tournament.
The postponement of the jersey unveiling has cast a shadow over Pakistan’s preparations, though anticipation remains high for the team’s opening clash against the Netherlands and subsequent high-profile matches against India, the United States, and Namibia. Observers will be closely watching the PCB’s final decision regarding participation, as the political and security dynamics surrounding the tournament continue to unfold.
