The illustrious legacy of the legendary playback singer Bashir Ahmed recently took centre stage on Pakistani Idol, the popular musical reality franchise broadcast on Pakistan’s Geo TV. In a poignant episode themed ‘Love and Friendship’, the show extended a prestigious invitation to the maestro’s children, Humaira Bashir and Raja Bashir, to serve as guest judges and represent the rich musical heritage of Bangladesh.
A Star-Studded Night in Karachi
The recording for this special episode took place on 28 January at the renowned Film Factory Studio in Karachi. It was an evening steeped in nostalgia and high-calibre performance. The judging panel featured some of the most prominent names in South Asian music, including the iconic Alamgir Haq, the world-renowned qawwali maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and celebrated musicians Zeb Bangash and Bilal Maqsood. Although the celebrated actor Fawad Khan is a regular judge on the series, he was notably absent during this particular filming session.
Humaira and Raja were received with extraordinary warmth and traditional hospitality. “As we entered the set, we were greeted by a shower of flower petals,” Humaira recalled. The emotional depth of the evening was further heightened when Rahat Fateh Ali Khan welcomed them by saying, “Welcome to the Bashir Ahmed music industry,” acknowledging the monumental influence their father had on the subcontinent’s cinematic sound.
Bridging Cultures Through Melody
During the programme, the siblings performed a curated selection of their father’s most cherished compositions. They began with a soulful rendition of ‘Ogo Priyotoma’ from the film Moner Manush, a duet originally performed by their parents, Bashir Ahmed and Meena Bashir. This was followed by a masterful medley of their father’s Urdu classics that remain cultural touchstones in Pakistan.

A Legacy Beyond Borders
Born in Kidderpore, Kolkata, in 1939, Bashir Ahmed moved to Dhaka in 1964. Before his relocation, he had already carved a niche for himself in the Urdu film industry, notably collaborating with the legendary Talat Mahmood in the film Talash.
Raja Bashir expressed his amazement at the cross-generational appeal of his father’s work. “I witnessed firsthand that his songs are not just remembered by the elderly; the ‘Gen-Z’ audience knows them word-for-word,” he observed.
