A Dual Legacy: Academia and Art
Bushra Shahriar’s career is a unique tapestry woven from rigorous scientific enquiry and creative expression. While the general public may recognise her for her evocative melodies, the academic community knows her as a dedicated scholar of urban planning.
She previously served as a lecturer at Stamford University from 2015 to 2017. During her initial tenure, she was instrumental in mentoring undergraduate students and refining the architectural curriculum. Her return is viewed by the university administration as a significant boost to the department’s research capabilities, particularly as the nation grapples with the complexities of modern urbanisation.
Academic Prowess and International Research
Following her first stint at Stamford, Bushra pursued advanced studies at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee. Her academic journey is marked by excellence:
Master’s Degree: Completed in Urban and Rural Planning at IIT Roorkee under a full merit scholarship.
Doctoral Research: Since 2019, she has been a full-time PhD researcher at the same institution.
Specialisation: Her doctoral thesis focuses on “Community-based Flood Resilience in Dhaka”, a subject of critical importance given Bangladesh’s geographical vulnerability to climate change.
Bushra is currently in the final stages of her doctoral candidacy, preparing to submit her thesis whilst resuming her teaching duties in Dhaka.

A Musical Ambassador
Beyond the lecture theatre, Bushra has carved out a niche as a “musical ambassador” for Bangladesh. Her songs, such as “Utsaber Bangladesh” and “Kheladhular Bangladesh”, often celebrate the spirit and resilience of the nation. Other hits like “Golpo Hobei Ay” and “Tomay Jodi” have garnered millions of views, showcasing her ability to balance a demanding scientific career with a high-profile presence in the arts.
Her reappointment comes at a time when the university seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical architecture and practical, climate-resilient urban design. Students at Stamford now have the rare opportunity to learn from an academic who not only understands the structural physics of a city but also the cultural heartbeat that defines its people.
