Army Deployed Across Six Districts

In response to heightened concerns over potential political gatherings, processions and rallies linked to the founding anniversary of the Awami League, the government has decided to deploy the army across six key districts, including the capital. The move comes amid apprehensions of possible unrest and attempts to disrupt public order through unauthorised demonstrations.

According to an urgent directive issued by the Political-2 Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs, military personnel will be deployed from Monday, 22 June, through to 30 June under the framework of “Aid to Civil Power”. During this period, army units will operate in support of civilian administration and law enforcement agencies, depending on operational requirements.

The deployment covers strategically significant urban and administrative zones: the capital Dhaka, the metropolitan areas of Chattogram and Gazipur, as well as the districts of Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur.

Government sources indicated that intelligence assessments have pointed to the likelihood of unlawful gatherings, showdowns and disruptive activities by banned organisations and their supporters in different parts of the country. Authorities fear such activities could escalate into disorder, potentially threatening public safety and causing damage to both life and property.

The Home Ministry’s directive emphasises that the primary objective of the deployment is to maintain peace and stability, ensure public safety, and safeguard critical infrastructure and civilian lives. The armed forces will act in coordination with the civil administration and law enforcement agencies, stepping in where necessary to prevent escalation of tensions.

The “Aid to Civil Power” framework is a standard constitutional arrangement through which the military supports civilian authorities during extraordinary situations. Typically, it is invoked to manage serious public order challenges, secure sensitive installations, and deter large-scale violence when ordinary law enforcement mechanisms require reinforcement.

Analysts suggest that the decision reflects a preventive security strategy aimed at ensuring stability during a politically sensitive period. Special attention is being given to areas considered highly significant from both political and economic perspectives, including the capital Dhaka, the industrial hubs of Gazipur and Narayanganj, the port city of Chattogram, and politically important districts such as Gopalganj and Faridpur.

Authorities have instructed relevant administrative bodies to ensure close coordination with the armed forces to facilitate smooth implementation of security measures. The government has expressed confidence that the deployment will help stabilise the security environment and allow citizens to continue their daily activities without disruption during the specified period.
