Bangladesh Navy Fortifies Teknaf Ahead of Elections

In anticipation of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Bangladesh Navy has stepped up security measures along the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar. Authorities have intensified efforts to ensure that no untoward incidents occur in the border areas and municipal polling centres during the election scheduled for 12 February. Measures include routine foot patrols, surveillance operations, preventive actions, and close coordination with other law enforcement agencies.

On Wednesday afternoon, Rear Admiral Md. Moinul Hasan, Commander of the Chattogram Naval Region, inspected the Navy contingent in Teknaf. During his visit, he held a meeting with local administration and law enforcement officials to finalise election security plans. Speaking at a subsequent press conference, he highlighted the strategic importance of enhanced monitoring due to the risk of illegal weapons and drug smuggling, unauthorised crossings, and human trafficking in the area.

Rear Admiral Hasan stated, “Teknaf is a high-risk border area. Our primary objective is to ensure that voters can exercise their democratic rights in a safe and peaceful environment. The Navy is fully prepared to meet this challenge.”

The Navy has positioned a variety of assets for rapid response in emergencies, including:

  • Naval ships and helicopters

  • Quick Response Forces and SWADS teams

  • Drones and body-worn cameras

  • Special intelligence surveillance

Since 20 July 2024, naval personnel have been deployed in the field to support local administration and maintain law and order. During this period, the Navy has conducted multiple successful operations, including the seizure of illegal arms and drugs, prevention of smuggling, interception of unauthorised entries, and disruption of human trafficking networks.

To ensure professionalism during the election, naval personnel have received specialised training and guidance on legal protocols and conduct. Rear Admiral Hasan expressed confidence that, with the combined efforts of the government, Election Commission, administration, and law enforcement agencies, the election would be free, fair, and credible.

The table below summarises the main components of the election security framework in Teknaf:
