Bangladesh’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have raised eyebrows after the selectors named a 15-member squad containing only two specialist fast bowlers for conditions in England and Scotland.
The squad, announced in Mirpur, includes only Marufa Akter and Fariha Islam as recognised pace options. In contrast, the rest of the bowling unit is heavily spin-oriented, reflecting Bangladesh’s long-standing reliance on slow bowling in subcontinental conditions.
Chief selector Sajjad Ahmed explained that the team management is considering fielding just one frontline pacer in the playing XI, depending on pitch behaviour. He noted that English summer conditions have not shown significant seam movement in recent times, making spin a more attractive option.
He said the tactical plan may evolve match by match: if conditions offer turn, Bangladesh could even go in with a single pacer and multiple spinners. However, he also admitted that recovery gaps between fixtures could allow flexible combinations if needed.
A recurring concern, however, is Bangladesh’s limited fast-bowling depth. At present, Marufa Akter remains the only pacer regularly featuring in the XI, while Fariha Islam has seen limited match exposure despite being in squads. Selector Sajjad acknowledged that the development pipeline for seam bowlers has been slow, indirectly forcing selection compromises.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana is also managing ongoing minor injury issues, though they are not considered serious enough to rule her out. The management has indicated that rest remains the only practical long-term solution.
Despite recent struggles—losing their last five T20 series and suffering a clean sweep against Sri Lanka at home—there remains cautious optimism within the camp. A replacement in the squad sees Taj Nehar coming in for Sharmine Sultana.
Before the World Cup, Bangladesh will feature in a tri-nation series in Scotland against hosts Scotland and the Netherlands, offering crucial match practice in similar conditions.
