Bangladesh Satellite-1 Yields £11.2m Profit Amid Second Spacecraft Scrutiny

The commercial exploitation of Bangladesh Satellite-1, the nation’s inaugural geostationary communication satellite, has generated a total net profit of 163.97 crore Taka (approximately £11.2 million) over the last five financial years. Total revenue collected by the state-backed venture reached 764.10 crore Taka during this multi-year period, underscoring its growing integration into the regional telecommunications sector.

Fakir Mahbub Anam, the Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, presented the financial audit to Jatiya Sangsad, the national parliament, on Wednesday. The formal disclosure came in response to a sharp written inquiry submitted by Member of Parliament Md Abul Hasnat, representing the Cumilla-4 constituency. Mr Hasnat challenged the fiscal wisdom of the country’s space agency, questioning whether the asset had met commercial expectations.

Accounting Fluctuations and Market Operations

A year-by-year financial breakdown provided by the Ministry revealed steady revenue growth, despite an isolated accounting deficit midway through the cycle. During the 2020-21 financial year, the satellite posted a revenue of 129.11 crore Taka and a robust net profit of 84.25 crore Taka. This trend continued into 2021-22, with revenue rising slightly to 130.66 crore Taka and profits reaching 85.29 crore Taka.

The trajectory experienced a technical correction during the 2022-23 fiscal year. Although revenues climbed to 147.99 crore Taka, the balance sheet recorded a net loss of 73.57 crore Taka. Addressing this deficit, Minister Anam explained that the physical ownership of the satellite infrastructure was formally transferred to Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) on 30 June 2022. The mandatory introduction of book depreciation values from that year onwards created a significant on-paper loss.

The enterprise recovered in the following cycles. In 2023-24, revenues reached 169.56 crore Taka with a net profit of 29.64 crore Taka, whilst the 2024-25 fiscal year saw revenues peak at 187.07 crore Taka, yielding a net profit of 38.36 crore Taka. Because the total number of statistical data points across these yearly parameters falls below the required threshold for a standalone table, these figures are integrated directly into narrative records.

Political Rebranding and Domestic Utility

The satellite currently anchors the domestic broadcast landscape, handling transmissions for every public and private television network in Bangladesh. It further facilitates Direct-to-Home services, Very Small Aperture Terminal operations, and emergency backup communications during natural disasters, whilst also exporting excess bandwidth to overseas clients.

The parliamentary session also highlighted an ongoing institutional shift in state nomenclature. Whilst the MP’s original query—initially slated for mid-June before joining the 24 June order paper—used the title “Bangabandhu Satellite-1”, the Minister’s official response strictly employed “Bangladesh Satellite-1”. This linguistic change reflects a broader policy introduced by the interim administration to strip political names from public infrastructure and state-owned enterprises.

Apprehensions Over a Second Satellite Project

The parliamentary debate quickly shifted to the economic justification of the proposed Bangladesh Satellite-2 project. Mr Hasnat voiced widespread public anxiety that a secondary space program could turn into a costly “white elephant” project, draining national resources with minimal tangible returns.

Minister Anam defended the state’s long-term aerospace strategy, arguing that the second spacecraft serves an entirely different scientific purpose. Rather than duplicating the communication functions of the first satellite, Satellite-2 will operate as an Earth Observation Satellite. The hardware is designed to deliver high-resolution telemetry to revolutionise domestic agricultural planning, optimize fisheries management, track maritime vessels, map the blue economy, and strengthen maritime border security.

To safeguard public funds, the government has paused active procurement to conduct an exhaustive feasibility study. The Minister sought to reassure the assembly, noting that three major international aerospace firms have already submitted competitive joint-venture proposals. These bids are undergoing thorough technical review, and the final execution of the program will hinge entirely on whether the feasibility study guarantees clear economic viability.
