India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh in September has been thrown into serious doubt amid renewed political tensions between the two neighbouring countries, leaving the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) increasingly concerned about whether the series can go ahead as planned.
BCB officials are still hoping that the situation will improve in the coming weeks. However, recent developments have offered little reassurance. A recent report by Cricbuzz suggested that the political climate has made the proposed series increasingly difficult to stage.
Political tensions deepen
The latest uncertainty follows a virtual press conference held in Delhi on 5 August involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several members of her political party. The event triggered fresh tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi, adding another complication to an already sensitive bilateral relationship.
On 8 August, Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed publicly questioned India’s decision to allow Hasina, who is currently in India, to address the media and engage in political activities concerning Bangladesh.
He questioned why the Indian government had provided such an opportunity to Hasina while she was facing a death sentence in Bangladesh in connection with crimes against humanity.
The development has also raised concerns within the BCB. According to an internal source, the press conference has significantly damaged the prospects of India’s proposed Bangladesh tour.
Earlier hopes of improved cricket ties
The latest development comes after a period in which there had been renewed expectations of closer cricketing ties between the two countries.
Earlier this year, Bangladesh withdrew from the ICC T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns. The decision was taken by the then interim government amid concerns over activities by extremist groups in India that were perceived as being hostile towards Bangladesh.
Political developments in Bangladesh subsequently created hopes that relations between the two cricket boards could improve. Following the February general election, when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won and took over from the Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration, expectations grew that sporting relations with India might also return to a more stable footing.
The BCB had been making efforts to host India, with the proposed tour carrying significance not only from a sporting perspective but also for the board’s finances. A bilateral series involving India can generate substantial commercial interest, making the proposed visit important for Bangladesh’s cricket administration.
BCB running out of time
Those hopes have now been weakened by the latest political developments. The response from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the subsequent remarks from the home minister have added to concerns over whether India will be willing to travel to Bangladesh in September.
A senior BCB official, speaking to Cricbuzz on condition of anonymity, expressed considerable doubt about the series going ahead.
“After everything that has happened recently, I am doubtful about the series. I do not think we will receive any response from the other side. To be honest, it was supposed to happen by 28 August. How much time do we have left?” the official said.
He added that the cricket board had done everything within its capacity to prepare for the proposed tour, but the situation had now moved beyond its control.
The official also indicated that the BCB had little room for further action unless the broader political circumstances changed. For the moment, the board can only wait and hope that the situation improves.
No formal cancellation of the series has been announced. That leaves the door technically open, but with the proposed tour approaching and political tensions showing little sign of easing, uncertainty is becoming the defining feature of India’s planned September visit to Bangladesh.
