Six more children have died in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours after developing symptoms associated with measles, while another 1,063 children have been reported with either confirmed measles or measles-like symptoms, according to the latest health authorities’ update.
The figures were released on Sunday afternoon, 9 August, in the Directorate General of Health Services’ latest measles situation report. The report said that although six children died after displaying symptoms consistent with measles during the latest 24-hour period, none of the deaths was confirmed through testing as being caused by measles.
Since 15 March, the country has recorded 873 deaths among children with confirmed measles or symptoms associated with the disease. Of these, 775 deaths involved children who had developed measles-like symptoms but whose infections were not confirmed by testing. A further 98 children died after being confirmed as having measles.
The distinction between confirmed and suspected cases remains significant in assessing the outbreak. During the latest 24-hour period, 75 children were confirmed to have measles, while 988 others were reported to have symptoms associated with the disease. Combined, the two categories produced 1,063 new cases in a single day.
The health authorities also reported substantial movement of patients through hospitals. A total of 938 children were admitted for treatment during the same period, while 942 were discharged after receiving medical care. The figures indicate that hospitals continue to manage a considerable number of children affected by the outbreak, even as many patients recover sufficiently to return home.
Since 15 March, the cumulative number of suspected measles cases has reached 136,320, of which 17,115 have been confirmed through testing. The gap between suspected and confirmed cases reflects the fact that not every child presenting with measles-like symptoms necessarily has a laboratory-confirmed measles infection.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that commonly causes fever, cough, a runny nose, red or watery eyes and a widespread rash. Children with severe illness can develop serious complications, including pneumonia and other potentially life-threatening conditions. Prompt medical assessment is therefore particularly important when symptoms appear, especially in children who become severely unwell.
The latest figures also underline the continuing pressure on the health system. With nearly 1,000 new children reported with measles or related symptoms in just 24 hours, hospitals and health facilities must continue monitoring admissions, treatment outcomes and deaths closely.
The Directorate General of Health Services is maintaining separate records for confirmed measles infections and patients showing measles-related symptoms. Such distinctions allow health officials to track the scale of the outbreak, identify changes in the pattern of illness and assess the severity of the situation more accurately.
With the cumulative death toll now at 873 since 15 March, the latest report highlights the continuing seriousness of the outbreak and the need for sustained surveillance, timely diagnosis and appropriate medical care for affected children.
