Bangladesh’s Border Guard (Border Guard Bangladesh) has arrested a suspected smuggler and seized four gold bars during a targeted operation along the Baradi frontier in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila, in a significant enforcement action against cross-border trafficking networks.
The incident took place on Saturday evening (11 April) in the Five Graves area near the border, following intelligence reports indicating attempted gold smuggling activity along the frontier corridor. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a patrol team from the Baradi Border Outpost (BOP), operating under Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), set up a surveillance position in the area to intercept suspected movements.
According to BGB sources, at approximately 7:15 pm, a man was observed travelling towards the border on a bicycle under suspicious circumstances. When challenged by the patrol team, he ignored repeated instructions to stop and attempted to flee the scene. The personnel pursued the individual and successfully apprehended him after a brief chase.
The arrested individual has been identified as 27-year-old Shree Samar Halder, son of Gopal Halder from Parkrishnapur village in Darshana upazila of Chuadanga district. During a subsequent search, the security personnel recovered a small bundle wrapped in green tape concealed on his person.
Upon opening the package, four gold bars were discovered. The seized gold was later weighed using a digital scale, confirming a total weight of 452 grams. Officials estimated the value of the confiscated gold at approximately BDT 9,609,520 (around 96.1 lakh taka).
In addition to the gold, a mobile phone and the bicycle used by the suspect were also seized by the authorities as part of the evidence collection process.

Commander of Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Hasan, confirmed the seizure and stated that all recovered items are in the process of being handed over to the appropriate authorities in accordance with legal procedures.
He further added that the detained suspect is currently under investigation and that necessary legal action is being prepared under applicable smuggling prevention laws. Authorities believe the incident is part of an ongoing effort by organised smuggling networks attempting to move precious metals across the border through less monitored rural routes.
Border security officials noted that the Baradi frontier has previously been identified as a sensitive zone for illegal cross-border trade, including gold and other high-value contraband. Enhanced patrols and intelligence-driven operations, they said, have recently led to an increase in interceptions.
The latest seizure underscores continued efforts by Border Guard Bangladesh to tighten border surveillance and disrupt smuggling operations, particularly in western border districts where such activities remain persistent.
Legal proceedings against the accused are expected to proceed once the investigation is completed and formal documentation is finalised by the authorities.
