Brazil World Cup Sentiment Survey

Public sentiment in Brazil regarding the national football team’s prospects at the FIFA World Cup has shown a marked decline, according to a recent survey. The findings indicate widespread scepticism among Brazilian respondents about the team’s ability to win the tournament, as well as reduced general interest in the competition itself.

Brazil have not won the FIFA World Cup since their 2002 triumph. Based on the survey results, many Brazilian respondents now believe that another title in 2026 appears unlikely. This perception has coincided with a noticeable decline in enthusiasm surrounding the tournament within the country.

According to the survey, 54 per cent of Brazilian participants stated that they have no particular interest in the World Cup. Only 12 per cent described themselves as “excited” about the event. In addition, 68 per cent of respondents believe that the five-time world champions have only a slim chance of winning the 2026 tournament.

The survey was initiated in April 2023, and its results have been published recently. It has been described as the most pessimistic set of findings ever recorded in relation to Brazilian public opinion on the World Cup, reflecting a significant shift in attitudes compared with previous periods of strong national optimism.

Brazil’s recent footballing performances have been cited within the survey context as a contributing factor to this outlook. In the latest World Cup qualifying campaign, the national team finished in fifth place to secure qualification for the finals. During the qualifiers, Brazil suffered two defeats against Argentina and also recorded a loss to Japan. These results are presented as part of the broader competitive record referenced in the survey findings.

The survey also addressed public opinion regarding Neymar’s potential involvement in the 2026 World Cup squad. On 18 May, Brazil’s final squad for the tournament is scheduled to be announced by head coach Carlo Ancelotti, resolving long-standing speculation over squad selection.

In relation to Neymar, the survey shows a divided public response. A significant proportion of respondents expressed opposition to his inclusion in the national squad.

The key results of the survey are summarised below:

No interest in the World Cup54%
Excited about the World Cup12%
Believe Brazil have slim chance of winning68%

Overall, the survey reflects a cautious and divided public outlook in Brazil regarding both the national team’s World Cup prospects and key selection decisions ahead of the 2026 tournament.
