Businessman attacked and robbed of three lakh taka in Adabor

A businessman was attacked and robbed of Tk 300,000 and a mobile phone in Dhaka’s Adabor area on Tuesday (16 June) morning. The incident occurred at around 10:30 am on Road No. 7 in the Adabor locality.

According to information provided by relatives of the victim and local sources, the injured businessman, Shafiqul Islam, was later rescued by residents and taken to the emergency department of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Relatives of the victim stated that Shafiqul Islam left his home in the morning carrying Tk 300,000 in cash and arrived at his shop shortly afterwards. Within a short time of opening the shop, 4 to 5 unidentified young men entered the premises carrying machetes. They reportedly attacked him, striking his right hand with a sharp weapon before taking the cash and mobile phone used for mobile financial transactions. The attackers then fled the scene.

Locals also reported that incidents of robbery, theft and violent crime have been increasing in the Adabor area. They claimed that a series of criminal incidents had occurred in the surrounding locality, including reports of a garage being looted in the Balur Maath area of Adabor-10 the previous night.

Residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that a group locally referred to as the “Kobji Kata” gang has become active again in the area. According to these accounts, the group was previously led by Anwar, also known as “Pani Anwar”, who is currently in prison. The group is now allegedly being led by his close associate Abu Saeed, who has also previously been in custody.

Local claims suggest the group consists of approximately 15 to 20 members. Individuals named by residents as allegedly associated with the group include Delwar, Rubel, Amir, Shahin, Sohel, Rana, Arif, Liton, Apon, Mehedi and Sujon. They are alleged to be involved in robbery, extortion and land-related criminal activities in areas including Adabor-10, Adabor-17, Shyamoli Housing, Turag Housing, Dhaka Udyan, Nabiganj and Chandrima Housing under Mohammadpur Police Station.

When contacted, Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Abdullah Al Mamun stated that police are aware of the incident and operations are underway to identify and arrest those involved. He added that the victim has been advised to file a formal case at the police station.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
