Four members of the same family sustained burn injuries in an explosion reportedly linked to a gas leak in Narayanganj’s Fatullah area early on Monday morning. The incident occurred at around 6:00am in the Lucky Bazar area of Kutubpur under Fatullah upazila.
The injured were identified as Abdul Kader, 50, and his three sons — Mohammad Mehedi, 17, Sakib, 16, and Rakib, 16. All four were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment following the explosion.
According to local residents, a gas line runs beside the house where the family lived, and the line had reportedly been leaking for a prolonged period. Residents said gas is believed to have accumulated inside the room, creating a confined and highly combustible environment.
The explosion occurred when a stove was lit in the morning. Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast, followed immediately by the rapid spread of fire inside the house.
A neighbour, Md Faruk, said local residents rushed to the scene after hearing the explosion and found the father and his three sons suffering from burn injuries inside the room. They were later rescued and taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Abdul Kader works as an autorickshaw driver and lived with his family in a rented house in the Lucky Bazar area of Kutubpur.
Assistant Professor Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, residential physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed that all four victims were undergoing treatment at the hospital. He said Abdul Kader had sustained burns to 57 per cent of his body, while Mehedi suffered burns to 18 per cent, Sakib to 17 per cent, and Rakib to 25 per cent.
The extent of the injuries is summarised below:
| Name | Age | Percentage of Burns |
|---|---|---|
| Abdul Kader | 50 | 57% |
| Mohammad Mehedi | 17 | 18% |
| Sakib | 16 | 17% |
| Rakib | 16 | 25% |
