A passenger bus collision with a stationary truck in Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha District has resulted in the severing of a bus driver’s leg and injuries to four passengers.
The incident took place at approximately 7:30am on Tuesday (5 May) in the Panta Para area of Gobindaganj municipal town, along a busy stretch of road in northern Bangladesh. According to information confirmed by the fire service and highway police, a Dhaka-to-Gaibandha passenger bus operated by Saikat Paribahan struck the rear of a cement-laden truck that had been parked on the roadside.
Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha District serves as a key transit corridor for both passenger and freight vehicles, and the Panta Para section is known for regular traffic congestion involving heavy transport.
Following the impact, the front section of the bus sustained extensive damage. The driver, Shanto Mia (26), son of Lutfar Rahman from Kupatola village under Gaibandha Sadar Upazila, became trapped in the wreckage. His right leg was severed at the scene, while his left leg was severely fractured and nearly amputated due to the force of the collision.
Four passengers travelling on the bus also sustained injuries. Local residents assisted emergency responders in rescuing the driver from the damaged vehicle before he was taken to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex. Given the critical nature of his condition, medical staff referred him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Fire Service officials reported that the severed limb was recovered from the accident site shortly after the incident. Masud Rana, Station Officer of Gobindaganj Fire Service Station, confirmed that the passenger bus had collided with the stationary truck from behind, resulting in severe structural damage to the bus and serious injuries to occupants. He also noted that preliminary observations suggested the possibility that the driver may have been drowsy at the time, although this has not been independently verified through formal investigation.
Highway police provided additional details regarding the incident. Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin stated that the driver had reportedly acknowledged feeling sleepy while driving. He also confirmed that the bus had been seized for investigation purposes. Injured passengers who suffered only minor injuries received initial treatment and were later discharged from care.
