Detectives Assaulted During Rupganj Operation

Three members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) South Division were reportedly assaulted and injured while attempting to arrest an accused individual during an operation in the Gausia area of Rupganj, Narayanganj. The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, has prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of those involved.

According to police sources, a four-member DB team travelled to the Bhulta–Gausia area at approximately 3:00 pm to execute an operation targeting a suspect in a pending criminal case. The team was led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Mamun Matubbar and included Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Aman Ullah, Constable Kabir Ahmed, and Constable Akash Ahmed.

Authorities stated that during the operation, a group comprising associates of the suspect and several local residents gathered at the scene. Tensions reportedly escalated rapidly, leading to an attack on the detective officers. Three members of the team were allegedly beaten and forcibly placed into a pickup vehicle before being taken to the Shantinagar Bazar area of Uchitpura Union in neighbouring Araihazar Upazila.

Police sources further alleged that the officers were subjected to additional physical abuse after being transported from the original location. The incident created significant concern among local law enforcement agencies, prompting an immediate response.

Upon receiving information about the situation, members of Araihazar Police Station rushed to the area and rescued the injured officers. They were initially taken to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex for emergency treatment before being transferred to Dhaka for specialised medical care due to the severity of their injuries.

The injured officers have been identified as SI Mamun Matubbar, ASI Aman Ullah and Constable Kabir Ahmed. Constable Akash Ahmed escaped physical harm because he had taken shelter in a nearby washroom during the disturbance. He later drove the DB team’s microbus to Araihazar Police Station and informed local police authorities about the unfolding situation.

Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sabjel Hossain confirmed that the injured officers received primary medical treatment before being referred to Dhaka. He stated that investigators are working to determine who participated in the assault and what factors contributed to the violence.

Meanwhile, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge A.H.M. Salauddin said his station had not received prior information regarding the DB operation in the Bhulta–Gausia area. He added that no coordination had taken place between the detective team and the local police before the operation commenced.

Providing further insight into the incident, Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi noted that the DB officers were conducting the operation in plain clothes. According to preliminary findings, some local residents may have been unable to verify the identities of the officers, resulting in confusion that ultimately escalated into public hostility. Officers from both Sonargaon and Araihazar police stations later assisted in rescuing the detectives from the scene.

The episode has reignited discussion about operational coordination among law enforcement agencies, particularly when officers conduct arrests outside their immediate jurisdiction or in plain clothes. Security experts frequently emphasise the importance of advance coordination with local police, visible identification measures and clear communication with local communities to reduce the risk of misunderstandings during sensitive operations.

Police officials have indicated that a comprehensive investigation is underway. Once the inquiry is completed and the full sequence of events is established, appropriate legal action is expected to be taken against those found responsible for the assault. The findings may also inform future procedures aimed at improving officer safety and operational effectiveness during field missions.
