Dhaka Traffic Chaos as Truck Topples on Nikunja Road

A major traffic disruption occurred this morning in the Nikunja residential area of Dhaka after a fully loaded truck overturned on the road, causing severe congestion that stretched along Airport Road and reached as far as Banani.

According to the Gulshan Traffic Police, the incident took place at approximately 8:53 AM near Nikunja-1, when the outbound truck lost balance and tipped over, partially blocking one lane. The mishap immediately caused a bottleneck, with vehicles moving at a snail’s pace while traffic authorities mobilised to clear the obstruction.

The Gulshan Traffic Division promptly informed the public via its official Facebook page, stating that efforts were underway to remove the overturned vehicle and restore the flow of traffic. By 9:30 AM, a follow-up post confirmed that the truck had been successfully removed. Officers were seen coordinating traffic to ensure that vehicles could gradually resume their journeys.

The incident caused significant disruption for commuters, including office workers and school-goers, many of whom faced long delays in reaching their destinations. The resulting traffic jam extended along Airport Road up to Banani’s Kamal Ataturk Avenue. Additionally, congestion stretched along the Matikata Flyover all the way to Mirpur’s Kalshi area, affecting thousands of motorists across multiple routes.

Local traffic authorities urged drivers to remain patient and advised commuters to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected areas. “We understand the inconvenience caused to the public, and our teams are working diligently to restore normal traffic conditions as quickly as possible,” a traffic officer said.

Although no casualties were reported, the overturned truck incident highlighted the vulnerability of Dhaka’s road network during peak hours and the importance of rapid response by traffic authorities to minimise public inconvenience.

Authorities have indicated that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident, including whether overloading or driver error contributed to the vehicle overturning.
