Dhaka Traffic Police Step Up Enforcement

In an intensified drive to restore order and discipline on the capital’s congested roads, the Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed 406 cases in a single day against motorists for violating traffic laws. The enforcement operation was carried out on Saturday, 7 February, across several key roads, intersections and traffic-prone areas of Dhaka, according to a statement issued by the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department.

The DMP said the campaign forms part of its routine and sustained efforts to curb traffic indiscipline, reduce congestion and minimise the risk of road accidents in the city. A wide range of offences were identified during the drive, including illegal parking, failure to adhere to designated lanes, riding motorcycles without helmets, not wearing seatbelts, operating unauthorised vehicles, driving without valid documents, and ignoring traffic signals.

Traffic officials noted that such violations not only disrupt the flow of vehicles but also significantly increase the likelihood of accidents, particularly in busy commercial and residential zones. The enforcement measures, they added, are intended to send a clear message that non-compliance with traffic regulations will not be tolerated.

An analysis of the cases by traffic division shows that Motijheel and Mirpur recorded the highest number of violations. In Motijheel, a major commercial hub with heavy daily traffic, 85 cases were filed against buses, trucks, covered vans, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws and motorcycles. Mirpur followed closely with 74 cases, a substantial proportion of which involved motorcycles, reflecting the growing prevalence of two-wheelers in the area.

Beyond issuing fines, the traffic police also took immediate corrective action on the streets. A total of 185 vehicles were dumped for illegal parking or being unfit for road use, while another 101 vehicles were removed with wreckers due to serious violations. According to DMP sources, these measures had an instant impact, easing congestion and improving traffic flow in several hotspots.

Senior DMP officials emphasised that regular enforcement drives are essential to instil awareness and build a culture of compliance among road users. They urged city residents to follow traffic laws diligently to ensure their own safety and that of others. The DMP reaffirmed that such operations will continue in the future as part of its broader commitment to maintaining traffic discipline and creating a safer, more orderly road system in Dhaka.
