Earthquake Tremors Felt in Bangladesh

A moderate magnitude earthquake originating in India’s northeastern state of Manipur was felt across Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, on Tuesday morning. According to initial assessments, there have been no reports of casualties or damage within Bangladesh.

The tremors were experienced at around 6:30 am Bangladesh Standard Time, briefly shaking buildings in several parts of the country. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation and Research Centre confirmed that the seismic event occurred at 6:29:36 am, with its epicentre located in Manipur, India. The location is approximately 436 kilometres from Dhaka.

Seismologists indicated that the earthquake was of moderate strength and occurred at a depth that allowed its effects to be felt across a relatively wide geographical area. Due to the proximity of the epicentre to the Bangladesh border, tremors were reported from multiple districts beyond the capital.

No aftershocks or subsequent seismic disturbances were immediately reported following the initial event. Authorities in Bangladesh have not issued any alerts, and normal activities resumed shortly after the tremors.

Different international and regional monitoring agencies recorded slightly varying data regarding the earthquake’s magnitude and depth, which is common in early seismic reporting due to differences in analytical methods and instrumentation.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) of India reported that the earthquake occurred at 5:59 am Indian Standard Time (6:29 am Bangladesh time), with a magnitude of 5.2. The epicentre was identified in the Kamjong region of Manipur at a depth of approximately 62 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

In contrast, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) registered the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.0, with a deeper focus of 100.6 kilometres. Despite these variations, both agencies confirmed the same general epicentral region in northeastern India.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department also recorded the event at a magnitude close to 5.0, aligning broadly with international observations.

Seismologists note that discrepancies in magnitude and depth readings are not unusual in the immediate aftermath of an earthquake. These differences arise due to variations in seismic networks, detection algorithms, and the timing of data updates. Over time, measurements are typically refined as additional data becomes available.

The earthquake’s moderate intensity and intermediate depth contributed to its perceptibility across Bangladesh, although no structural impact was reported. Monitoring agencies continue to observe regional seismic activity as part of ongoing surveillance in the Indo-Burmese tectonic zone, which is known for periodic seismic movement.
