Illegal Diesel Seized in Belkuchi

Authorities in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj have seized a substantial quantity of illegally stored diesel during a coordinated enforcement drive, alongside the sentencing of a trader under mobile court proceedings. The operation, conducted on Tuesday afternoon (21 April), has drawn significant local attention amid growing concerns over fuel market irregularities.

The joint initiative, led by the upazila administration in cooperation with law enforcement, targeted a shop in the Shernagar Bazar area following intelligence reports suggesting unlawful stockpiling of petroleum products. During the raid, officials recovered 1,744 litres of diesel stored without valid authorisation or supporting documentation.

Preliminary verification by the enforcement team confirmed that the fuel had been kept in violation of existing regulations governing the storage and distribution of petroleum products. Authorities noted that such unregulated stockpiling poses a risk to market stability, potentially contributing to artificial shortages and price manipulation.

Following the seizure, the confiscated diesel was disposed of in accordance with government procedures. It was sold through an official auction mechanism, and the proceeds were subsequently deposited into the national treasury.

A mobile court was later convened on-site, presided over by Upazila Executive Officer Afrin Jahan. After reviewing the evidence, the court found the trader, identified as Rabiul Islam, guilty of unlawful possession and storage of fuel intended for commercial exploitation without permission. He was sentenced to three days of imprisonment and immediately transferred to judicial custody.

Law enforcement officials emphasised that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure transparency in essential commodity markets. Belkuchi Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Imam Zafar, stated that illegal fuel storage can significantly disrupt supply chains and create undue pressure on consumers. He added that routine monitoring and intelligence-based operations would continue in the region.

Local administration officials also reiterated their commitment to maintaining stability in the fuel market, particularly ahead of periods of fluctuating demand. They stressed that strict legal action would be taken against any individuals or entities found involved in hoarding or black-market activities.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion among residents, many of whom welcomed the crackdown as a necessary step toward curbing malpractice in the local trade environment. Community members expressed the view that sustained enforcement would help restore fairness and prevent exploitation in the distribution of essential goods.
