Background of the dispute
Local accounts indicate that Arif, son of Liaquat Ali of Shankar Chand village, had previously borrowed approximately 1.5 million Bangladeshi Taka from Ziaur Rahman, son of the late Rasul Fakir, of the same locality, for business purposes. It is alleged that Arif later failed to repay the amount and subsequently left the area, which led to ongoing tension between the two sides.
As the dispute remained unresolved, arrangements were being made for a mediated settlement.
On Friday evening at around 8:00 pm, Ziaur Rahman and his relatives brought Arif’s son to the private office of Shankar Chand Union Parishad Chairman Mohiul Alam Sujon. The chairman reportedly advised both parties to wait for formal arbitration proceedings in order to reach an amicable settlement.
Escalation and violence
However, tensions escalated during the preparatory stage of the mediation. A heated argument broke out between Liaquat Ali, his younger son Al-Amin, and his wife Jesmin Khatun on one side, and Alimuddin, who is the uncle of Ziaur Rahman, on the other.
The verbal exchange quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Family members of the deceased allege that Alimuddin was beaten indiscriminately by members of the opposing group. He reportedly suffered severe chest injuries and lost consciousness at the scene.
Local residents immediately transported him to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where attending medical personnel declared him dead upon arrival.
Police response and arrests
Following the incident, enraged locals reportedly detained Liaquat Ali and his wife Jesmin Khatun before informing law enforcement authorities.
Officers from the Sarojganj Police Camp, led by the in-charge, arrived at the scene with additional forces and brought the situation under control. The detained individuals were subsequently taken into police custody.
Chuadanga Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed the incident and stated that the body had been sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. He further confirmed that preparations are underway to file a case in connection with the incident.
Police have also indicated that operations are continuing to apprehend others involved in the altercation.
