Fatal Gang Violence in Badarganj

A violent confrontation between rival “adolescent gang” factions in Badarganj, Rangpur, resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man on Tuesday, 5 May 2026. The victim, identified as Ariful Islam, was a professional van driver and the son of Rezaul Islam, residing in the Pathanpara neighbourhood of the municipality. Following the lethal assault, which occurred in broad daylight, local police successfully apprehended one suspect, 22-year-old Jamal Hossain, while several others remain at large.

The Catalyst: Confrontation at Rangpur Court

The sequence of events leading to the fatality began earlier on Tuesday within the precincts of the Rangpur Court. According to reports provided by witnesses and the Badarganj Police Station, two opposing local groups were present at the court for a scheduled hearing regarding a pre-existing legal case.

One faction, led by an individual named Mominul, consisted of five members. The opposing faction was led by Firoz Shah, a figure locally known by the alias “Murder Firoz.” While on the court premises, an altercation broke out when Firoz’s associates launched a physical assault on Mominul’s group. In the ensuing fracas, Mominul sustained a broken nose, and two of his associates were injured while attempting to defend him. Although Firoz reportedly attempted to mediate a temporary resolution between the parties before they left the court, the underlying tension remained unresolved.

Retaliation and Localised Conflict

The conflict escalated significantly once the groups returned to their home locality in Badarganj. Driven by a desire for retribution for the injuries sustained at the court, Mominul and his followers allegedly armed themselves with sharp weapons and began a systematic search for Firoz and his associates. When they failed to locate their direct rivals, the group reportedly targeted Firoz’s private residence, further inflaming the situation.

In a counter-retaliatory move, Firoz and his supporters mobilised to locate Mominul’s affiliates. At approximately 4:00 pm, the search culminated in a violent encounter at the Baluabhata Mor area, specifically near the Ambia Mor intersection. It was here that they encountered Ariful Islam. Though Ariful was a resident of the same village as many of those involved, his family maintains he was a simple labourer. However, Firoz’s group intercepted him, leading to a fatal outcome.

Details of the Fatal Assault

Eyewitnesses reported that Firoz and his associates surrounded Ariful’s van and subjected him to an indiscriminate attack using sharp, lethal weapons. Ariful sustained multiple deep wounds during the assault. Local bystanders eventually managed to intervene, forcing the attackers to flee the scene.

The critically injured victim was rushed to the Badarganj Upasila Health Complex. Upon arrival at the emergency facility, Dr Yadondro Nath, the attending medical officer, conducted an immediate assessment and pronounced Ariful dead. The medical team noted that the severity of the haemorrhaging from the multiple stab wounds made resuscitation impossible.

Official Response and Legal Proceedings

The victim’s father, Rezaul Islam, has called for immediate and stringent legal action against those responsible. Providing a statement on the incident, he said:

“My son earns his living as a van driver. When he reached Ambia Mor, Murder Firoz’s group suddenly appeared and hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons. We demand proper justice for this act.”

Hasan Zahid Sarkar, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Badarganj Police Station, confirmed that a police team visited the site of the attack and the health complex shortly after the incident. He stated that the police have taken custody of the body and initiated the process for a transfer to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination.

The OC further clarified that law enforcement agencies are conducting active raids to secure the arrest of Firoz Shah and the other fugitives involved in the killing. While Jamal Hossain is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, the police have prioritised the capture of the primary accused to prevent further retaliatory violence in the municipality.

Social Impact and Security Concerns

This incident underscores a broader socio-legal issue in the region regarding the rise of organized “adolescent gangs.” Despite the label, many members, such as the 22-year-old detainee and the 30-year-old victim, fall outside the adolescent age bracket, indicating the entrenchment of these factions within the adult population. The transition of a legal dispute at a district court into a fatal street battle highlights the volatility of these rivalries.

The local administration has increased police presence in Pathanpara and Baluabhata Mor to maintain order and reassure residents. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities compile further forensic evidence from the crime scene and coordinate with the court to review the history of the dispute between Mominul and Firoz Shah.
