A two-month-old infant has died in circumstances that have led to the arrest of his father in Fulgazi Upazila. The incident, which took place on Thursday night (11 June), has caused widespread shock and concern across the locality.
The deceased child, identified as Mohammad Junaed, was the son of Mohammad Sultan (30), who has been detained by police for questioning. The family had been residing in a rented house in the Member Colony area near Fulgazi Bazar. Their permanent home is in Kakairgora Union under Durgapur Upazila in Netrokona district, and they had moved to Feni district for livelihood purposes.
According to the mother, Runa Akter, her husband had long been struggling with drug addiction and was often aggressive and neglectful of family responsibilities. She alleged that he frequently subjected her and other family members to both physical and psychological abuse while under the influence of narcotics.
She further stated that on the night of the incident, her husband sent her out of the house to purchase a drink after returning from work. During her absence, the infant reportedly became unresponsive. Upon returning, she found the child not reacting and immediately attempted to seek medical assistance. However, she alleged that her husband obstructed efforts to take the baby to hospital without delay. With the help of neighbours, the child was eventually taken to Feni 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The accused father, Mohammad Sultan, has presented a different account during preliminary police questioning. He claimed that the child slipped from his arms while he was playing with him, resulting in an accidental fall, after which the infant became unconscious.
Medical officers at the hospital’s emergency department stated that the child had already died before arrival. They also noted visible head injuries on the body, although the exact cause of death will only be confirmed following an autopsy report.
Police have since recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. The accused has been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation, and a formal case is in the process of being registered.
