In a move that has delighted football enthusiasts worldwide, FIFA has announced a brand-new, lower-priced ticket category for the 2026 World Cup, addressing criticism over previously steep ticket costs. The global governing body of football confirmed that a special ticket priced at just $60 will now be available for every match of the tournament.
The new category, officially named the ‘Supporter Entry Tier,’ is aimed at fans who travel to support their national teams in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the host nations of the 2026 World Cup. FIFA emphasised that this ticket will be available for all 104 matches, including the final, though numbers will be strictly limited due to high demand.
According to FIFA, the initiative is designed to make attending the tournament more accessible for genuine supporters and to encourage national pride among travelling fans. Each national football federation will allocate 10 per cent of its total ticket quota to this budget-friendly tier, ensuring that the tickets reach those who are truly dedicated to following their team.
Earlier, European fan organisation Football Supporters Europe (FSE) had criticised the pricing for the 2026 World Cup as “exorbitant” and “unprecedented,” noting that ticket prices were nearly five times higher than the Qatar 2022 World Cup. FSE described the high cost as a betrayal of the World Cup’s heritage, arguing that it risks alienating ordinary fans.
Despite welcoming the $60 ticket announcement, FSE stated that the gesture does not go far enough. In a recent statement, the group suggested that FIFA’s decision appears primarily aimed at easing the growing global backlash rather than genuinely supporting fans. Moreover, FSE pointed out that only a few hundred fans per match per team are expected to benefit, leaving the vast majority to purchase tickets at historically high prices. Concerns were also raised about the lack of special provisions for disabled supporters and their companions.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also weighed in on the matter. In a post on X, he praised the affordable tickets but urged FIFA to do more, highlighting the importance of making World Cup access genuinely inclusive. Starmer emphasised that ticket policies should ensure that passionate supporters do not become excluded from the global spectacle.
FIFA has stressed that national federations must allocate these $60 tickets to genuine and committed fans. Additionally, the governing body announced that administrative fees for knockout-stage ticket refunds will be waived if a team is eliminated, giving supporters greater financial flexibility.
Demand for World Cup tickets has already reached record levels, with approximately 20 million applications submitted to date. FIFA plans to hold the first phase draw for all ticket categories on 13 January, marking the beginning of what promises to be an unprecedentedly competitive ticketing process.
The introduction of the Supporter Entry Tier represents a significant step towards balancing accessibility and affordability, giving fans on a budget the opportunity to witness football’s biggest stage without breaking the bank.
