A murder case has been filed over the killing of five members of a family in Kapasia, Gazipur, with the alleged perpetrator, Furkan Mia, named as the principal accused, police said. Several unidentified individuals have also been listed as accused in the case.
The case was lodged at Kapasia Police Station on Saturday evening, 9 May, by MD.Shahadat Molla, the father of victim Sharmin Khanam.
According to police, the incident took place on Friday night at a rented house in the Rautkona area of Kapasia Upazila. The victims were identified as Furkan’s wife, Sharmin Khanam, 35; their three daughters, Mim, 14, Maria, 8, and Faria, 2; and Sharmin’s younger brother, Rasul Mia, 18.
Police and local sources said preliminary investigations suggest that Furkan allegedly mixed sedatives with food served to family members. After they lost consciousness, he is suspected of killing them one by one with a sharp weapon during the night before fleeing the scene.
On Saturday morning, neighbours became aware of the incident and informed police. Officers later recovered the bodies from the residence and sent them to the morgue of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Investigators also recovered a handwritten note from the crime scene. Police said the document referred to domestic disputes, financial tensions, and various allegations made against Furkan’s wife. However, law enforcement officials noted that the claims mentioned in the note have not yet been independently verified and remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Kapasia Police Station’s officer-in-charge said the suspect remains absconding. Multiple police teams have been deployed in an effort to locate and arrest him.
Authorities have not yet announced any confirmed motive behind the killings. Investigators are continuing to examine all available evidence, including the handwritten document, forensic findings, and witness statements, to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the underlying cause of the murders.
