A man was allegedly beaten to death in a dispute over interest payments in Rajoir Upazila of Madaripur District, according to local police and family members.
The incident took place on Saturday evening, 9 May, in Krishnapur village under Paikpara Union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Rahim Sardar, 48, son of Sohrab Sardar and a resident of the same village.
According to local residents and family sources, Rahim had borrowed money on interest from Asad Bepari, a man from the same locality, for business purposes. A dispute reportedly arose on Saturday evening regarding repayment of the money.
Witness accounts state that an argument broke out between Rahim and Asad over the outstanding payment. At one stage, the altercation turned violent, and Rahim was allegedly assaulted by Asad and several associates. He sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Family members later rescued him and took him to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Doctors there declared him dead upon arrival.
Rahim’s sister, Nilufa Begum, alleged that her brother had initially borrowed Tk 50,000 on interest from Asad. She claimed that Rahim later repaid Tk 100,000, including both principal and accumulated interest. Despite this, Asad allegedly continued demanding additional money.
She further alleged that Asad had threatened Rahim with death if further payment was not made.

Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Aminul Islam of Rajoir Police Station said the incident stemmed from a financial dispute. According to police, Rahim and Asad had previously been involved in business together.
The police officer said that when creditor Asad approached Rahim seeking payment, an argument developed between the two men. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, during which Rahim was punched and later died.
Police said legal proceedings are underway, and a case in connection with the death is being prepared.
Incidents involving informal lending and high-interest financial arrangements remain a recurring source of disputes in rural areas of Bangladesh, particularly where transactions are conducted without formal agreements or legal oversight.
