Grandmother Killed in Land Dispute

A tragic incident in Mymensingh’s Phulpur upazila has left the local community in shock after a 70-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her grandson over a long-standing dispute concerning land ownership.

The incident took place on Wednesday night at approximately 9:00 p.m. in Jatia village under Bhaitkandi Union. The victim, Ayesha Khatun (70), daughter of the late Nabi Hossain, was reportedly attacked inside the locality where she had been living independently for many years.

The accused, Jasim Uddin (35), son of the late Mahidul Islam, is the victim’s grandson. According to family accounts, he had been raised by his grandmother following the death of his father and had maintained a close relationship with her during his early years. However, tensions within the family gradually escalated over property-related matters.

Local and police sources indicate that Ayesha Khatun owned several parcels of land, parts of which were being cultivated by Jasim Uddin. Over time, disagreements emerged regarding ownership and future inheritance claims. Villagers suggest that Jasim had been pressuring his grandmother to transfer ownership of the land to his name, allegedly out of concern that other relatives from Ayesha Khatun’s extended family might later stake claims.

In recent months, the situation reportedly deteriorated further due to ongoing domestic and familial instability in Jasim Uddin’s personal life, including separation from his wife. These circumstances are believed to have contributed to rising tensions between grandmother and grandson.

On the night of the incident, a heated argument broke out between the two over the land dispute. The confrontation quickly escalated, and in a moment of extreme violence, Jasim Uddin allegedly attacked Ayesha Khatun with a sharp cutting weapon, inflicting multiple fatal injuries. She died at the scene.

Locals responded immediately, detaining the accused before handing him over to the police. Officers later arrived at the location, recovered the body, and completed the initial inquest report. The body has since been sent for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure.

Police have confirmed that the accused is in custody and that legal proceedings are underway. Authorities also stated that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the killing.

The incident has triggered widespread grief and anger in the area, with residents expressing disbelief that a domestic land dispute could escalate into such a brutal killing.
