Heightened Political Tensions Grip Dhaka

Political tensions have intensified across Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh as the anniversary of a banned political organisation has triggered competing street demonstrations, precautionary political gatherings and heightened security deployments nationwide. The situation has created a sensitive atmosphere in which rival parties and alliances are simultaneously mobilising supporters while law enforcement agencies remain on maximum alert to prevent any deterioration of public order.

Multiple political blocs, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, the National Citizen Party (NCP), and an 11-party alliance, have either announced separate programmes or indicated plans for street-level presence. While the BNP has not formally declared a large-scale mobilisation, its associate bodies have reportedly been instructed to remain on alert and prepared for rapid political response depending on the evolving situation.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stated that if any group attempts to destabilise public order or provoke unrest, the authorities are expected to take swift and lawful action. His remarks reflect the broader concern among opposition actors regarding possible escalation during politically sensitive dates.

In parallel, the party’s youth wing has called for nationwide protest marches, condemning what it describes as misinformation, political conspiracy and undisciplined conduct in public life. These demonstrations are scheduled to take place across districts, metropolitan areas, sub-districts and local administrative units, reflecting a coordinated mobilisation strategy.

The NCP has also announced protest rallies across the country, insisting that its movement will continue until demands for judicial accountability are met. Meanwhile, the 11-party alliance has planned a central rally in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area, focusing on alleged enforced disappearances, killings and broader demands for justice. Alliance leaders have also urged the government to ensure stability and prevent any deterioration of the security environment.

To contain potential unrest, security has been significantly reinforced in Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Gopalganj and Faridpur. Military personnel have been deployed under directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs for a ten-day period from 22 to 30 June, alongside enhanced monitoring by police and intelligence units.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed that intelligence reports have identified activities linked to a banned political organisation, which could potentially pose risks to public safety. Authorities have therefore instructed all security agencies to remain in a state of heightened readiness and to respond promptly to any incidents of provocation or sabotage.

Overall, the convergence of multiple political programmes and counter-programmes has placed Bangladesh’s political environment in a fragile and highly sensitive position. Government agencies and security forces are working in close coordination to ensure that public safety is maintained and that no incidents of large-scale confrontation occur during this period of intensified political activity.
