An Indian national has been detained in southern Bangladesh after allegedly entering the country illegally and attempting to conceal his presence, according to the Coast Guard and local authorities.
The arrest took place at around 4:30 pm on Saturday in the vicinity of Khayerghat Bridge in Bhola Sadar Upazila. Officials from the Bangladesh Coast Guard’s southern zone said the operation was conducted as part of routine surveillance and intelligence-led efforts to curb illegal cross-border movement and associated criminal activity in coastal regions.
The detained individual has been identified as Abdul Momin, son of Bashar Ali, originally from the village of Banshpukur under Jatrapur Police Station in Sonamura area of Tripura. Preliminary interrogation indicates that he admitted to entering Bangladesh without authorisation.
Coast Guard sources stated that acting on confidential intelligence, a specialised team from the Bhola base carried out the operation in the Khayerghat Bridge area, successfully locating and apprehending the suspect. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to crossing into Bangladesh on 7 April through the Birampur border area of Dinajpur District with assistance from a drug trafficking network.
Authorities suspect that after entering Bangladesh, he moved across several regions while attempting to avoid detection. However, sustained intelligence monitoring eventually enabled security forces to track his movements and confirm his presence in Bhola Sadar Upazila.
Following the arrest, initial legal procedures were completed, and the suspect was handed over to Bhola Sadar Police Station. The officer-in-charge confirmed that a case has been filed under relevant sections relating to illegal entry, and that he is expected to be produced before a court on Sunday as part of ongoing judicial proceedings.
Security and administrative officials emphasised that unauthorised border crossing poses serious national security concerns. Such incidents are often linked, they noted, to wider transnational criminal networks involved in drug trafficking, human smuggling, and other illicit activities.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard further stated that surveillance operations in coastal and border-adjacent areas will be intensified. Authorities have also urged local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to law enforcement agencies to help prevent future incidents.
