FIFA president Gianni Infantino has rejected allegations concerning his personal life, as scrutiny of his leadership continues to intensify amid wider controversy surrounding the governing body of world football.
A report by British newspaper The Telegraph alleged that, during Infantino’s time at UEFA, a woman who was said to have had a relationship with him received a six-figure payment from European football’s governing body.
Infantino’s representatives have strongly denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the FIFA president described the claims as completely false and said there had been no incident involving inappropriate behaviour by Infantino. The spokesperson also maintained that neither UEFA nor FIFA staff had ever made a complaint about his conduct.
Infantino joined UEFA in 2000 and rose through the organisation before becoming its secretary general in 2009. He remained in that position until 2016, when he was elected FIFA president. His long association with European football administration has therefore placed the latest allegations under particular scrutiny.
According to the report, the woman at the centre of the allegations received a substantial payment from UEFA during the period when Infantino was serving as secretary general. UEFA has not denied that a payment was made. Instead, the organisation said it was a form of departure payment and that it also covered the cost of the woman completing an MBA at a local business school.
UEFA has maintained that the payment was made in accordance with the rules and practices that were in place at the time. The organisation has also pointed out that its policies have subsequently been revised and modernised to reflect the standards expected of a major international sporting institution.
Infantino’s spokesperson has nevertheless rejected any suggestion that the payment was connected to inappropriate conduct. The spokesperson said no UEFA or FIFA employee had ever raised a complaint about Infantino’s behaviour and insisted that no improper incident involving him had taken place.
The allegations have emerged at a particularly difficult moment for the FIFA president. Infantino has already faced criticism over plans involving the commercial rights associated with the World Cup. A proposal to sell a 20 per cent stake in World Cup commercial rights to private investors, with the aim of raising around $4.2 billion, generated strong opposition in several parts of European football.
FIFA eventually stepped back from that plan following widespread criticism. Infantino also apologised for what he described as mistakes connected with the controversy, but he did not resign and retained the backing of senior figures within FIFA.
The dispute has also exposed divisions within international football. Several European countries have withdrawn or reconsidered their support for Infantino, with some even raising the possibility of boycotting FIFA competitions. At the same time, influential figures within football administrations in South America and Africa continue to support him.
The latest allegations have therefore added another layer to an already complex debate over Infantino’s leadership. However, the claims concerning his personal conduct remain allegations, not established findings. His representatives have categorically denied wrongdoing, while UEFA has defended the payment as an arrangement made under the rules applicable at the time.
With Infantino continuing to lead FIFA, attention is now likely to remain focused on whether further evidence or any formal investigation emerges. For the moment, the competing accounts leave the controversy unresolved, adding to the growing scrutiny surrounding the FIFA president and his administration.
