A 73-year-old condemned prisoner from the Dhaka Central Jail has died shortly after being taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, prompting standard post-mortem and legal procedures by the authorities.
According to prison officials, the inmate, Khan Md. Torab Ali, experienced a sudden deterioration in his health while in custody at the prison located in Keraniganj Upazila. He was immediately transferred from the facility to the hospital on Tuesday evening (14 April), around 6:00 pm, in an effort to secure urgent medical treatment.
Upon arrival at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, attending physicians examined him but confirmed that he had already died before any meaningful treatment could be administered. Hospital police later verified the death and initiated the required medico-legal procedures. His body was subsequently moved to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Prison authorities stated that the inmate had been serving a death sentence in connection with a murder case filed in 1991 at Manikganj Sadar Police Station. He had reportedly been in long-term detention at Dhaka Central Jail following his conviction under relevant sections of the penal code relating to homicide and related offences.
Officials further noted that the deceased had been suffering from age-related health complications, which may have contributed to the sudden decline in his condition. However, they emphasised that the definitive cause of death will only be confirmed once the post-mortem report is completed and reviewed.
Standard procedures for in-custody deaths are now being followed, including the preparation of an internal inquiry report by the prison administration and coordination with law enforcement authorities. The body will be handed over to the family after completion of all legal formalities.
