Authorities at the Charjabbar Police Station in Noakhali have confirmed that the death of a teenage madrasa student, which was initially reported as a fatality resulting from a lightning strike, was actually a case of suicide. The deceased has been identified as Tanjina Akter, a 17-year-old student who was notable for her exceptional academic performance in the Subornachar Upazila. The correction of the cause of death was formally issued on the afternoon of Tuesday, 28 April 2026, by Md. Lutfur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local precinct.
The incident took place at roughly 06:30 am on Tuesday morning in the Nayapara village, located within Ward No. 8 of the Char Amanullah Union. Tanjina Akter, the daughter of Sheikh Muzam Sentu, was a first-year Alim student at the Ismailia Fazil Madrasa.

Inconsistencies in the Family’s Narrative
Following the tragic discovery, the victim’s family initially claimed that Tanjina had died due to the indirect physiological effects of a severe lightning strike. They maintained that during a period of inclement weather, a bolt struck in close proximity to their home while Tanjina was in her room. The family asserted that the profound auditory shock of the thunder caused her to suffer a fatal “stroke” or cardiac arrest.
However, police intervention soon revealed that this account did not align with the physical evidence at the scene. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Lutfur Rahman, who conducted an on-site inspection, clarified the findings:
“I visited the location personally upon receiving the report. There were no physical indicators or environmental symptoms consistent with a lightning-related death. Our preliminary assessment determined the cause of death to be hanging.”
Social Stigma and the Concealment of Facts
According to local reports, the decision by the family to misreport the incident as a natural disaster was likely influenced by the prevailing social and cultural stigma surrounding suicide in rural regions. There was also a significant desire to avoid a mandatory autopsy. By attributing the death to a lightning strike, the family reportedly sought to settle the matter as a natural occurrence, thereby bypassing formal police inquiries and proceeding immediately to funeral rites.
The police have highlighted that while the trauma of losing a child can lead to such desperate attempts to avoid legal scrutiny, accurate reporting is a fundamental requirement for the administration of justice. Law enforcement officials noted that concealing the true nature of a death complicates the legal proceedings and prevents a clear understanding of the underlying causes.
A Notable Loss to the Academic Community
Tanjina Akter was far from an ordinary student; she was regarded as one of the brightest academic prospects in the Subornachar region. Her scholastic achievements were a source of pride for both her family and her institution. In the Dakhil examinations of the preceding year, she was one of only two students in the entire Subornachar Upazila to secure a GPA-5, the highest attainable grade in the national curriculum.
The faculty and student body at Ismailia Fazil Madrasa have expressed significant grief over the loss. As an Alim first-year student, she was expected to continue her trajectory of academic excellence. Her death has sparked a broader conversation within the local community regarding the immense pressure and mental health challenges faced by high-achieving students.
Formal Legal and Medical Procedures
Following the police’s findings, the body was recovered and sent to the Noakhali 250-Bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. This procedure is essential to confirm the definitive cause of death and to rule out any possibility of external foul play.
OC Md. Lutfur Rahman has stated that the legal process is currently in the “procedural phase.” An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered at the Charjabbar Police Station. While the investigation remains active, authorities are attempting to ascertain the specific circumstances or grievances that may have prompted a student of such high calibre to take her own life. Final administrative actions will be determined once the autopsy report is officially submitted to the investigative team.
