IST Student Succumbs to Fatal Injuries Following Mohakhali Road Accident

A 25-year-old student, identified as Nilima Rani Sumona, has died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) following a severe road traffic accident in the Mohakhali district of the capital. The victim passed away at approximately 20:30 BST on Sunday, 26 April 2026, while undergoing intensive treatment at the hospital’s One-Stop Emergency Centre (OSEC).

The fatality has underscored the persistent dangers associated with Dhaka’s high-traffic corridors, particularly during the late-night hours. Preliminary investigations by hospital police are underway, though specific details regarding the vehicle involved in the collision remain unconfirmed.

Sequence of Events and Emergency Response

The accident occurred late on Saturday night in the Amtoli area of Mohakhali, a major transit hub in Dhaka. Nilima Rani Sumona was reportedly crossing or moving through the Amtoli intersection when she was struck by a vehicle. Local pedestrians discovered her lying on the road in a critical state and immediately intervened to provide assistance.

Recognising the gravity of her condition, the bystanders rescued her from the thoroughfare and arranged for her immediate transport to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was admitted to the facility during the early hours of Sunday morning. Despite the sustained efforts of the medical team at the OSEC throughout the day, her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead on Sunday evening.

Victim Profile and Academic Pursuits

Nilima Rani Sumona was the daughter of Subash Chandra Barman, originating from the village of Choto Kustari in the Chilmari Upazila of Kurigram district. At the time of her death, she was residing in the capital to further her education and professional career in the medical sciences.

Her academic and professional profile included:

  • Academic Status: She was a second-year student at the Institute of Health Technology (IST), a prominent state-run medical technology institution in Dhaka.

  • Professional Role: Alongside her studies, she was employed as a lab assistant at a private hospital located in the Mohakhali area, gaining practical experience in her field of study.

Upon arriving at the hospital from Kurigram, Mr Barman expressed profound distress regarding the lack of clarity surrounding the incident. He noted that he had received news of the accident but was not present when it occurred. “I found my daughter’s body at the hospital; I do not yet know the circumstances of how she met with this accident,” he informed reporters.

Police Investigation and Statutory Procedures

Inspector Md. Faruq, the In-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed that the body has been placed in the hospital mortuary. As is customary with road traffic fatalities, a post-mortem examination will be conducted to formally establish the cause of death before the remains are released to the family for funeral rites.

“The relevant police station has been formally notified of the fatality,” Inspector Faruq stated. The Banani Police Station, which oversees the Mohakhali Amtoli jurisdiction, is expected to spearhead the investigation. Investigative priorities will include:

  • CCTV Recovery: Reviewing surveillance footage from the Amtoli intersection to identify the offending vehicle and determine if traffic laws were breached.

  • Witness Statements: Attempting to locate and record formal statements from the pedestrians who initially rescued the victim.

  • Vehicle Identification: Determining whether the incident constitutes a ‘hit-and-run,’ as the vehicle responsible was not reported to have stayed at the scene.

Road Safety Concerns in Mohakhali

The Amtoli stretch of Mohakhali is notorious for its complex traffic flow, being a convergence point for the Mohakhali Flyover, the inter-district bus terminal, and heavy commercial traffic. Road safety advocates have frequently cited the lack of adequate lighting and the prevalence of speeding during late-night hours as significant risk factors for pedestrians in this zone.

As of late Sunday night, no suspects have been detained. Once the autopsy is complete and legal formalities are concluded, the body of Nilima Rani Sumona will be transported to her ancestral home in Kurigram for burial. The incident remains a matter of active police inquiry.
