Frank Lampard, recently promoted with Coventry City, has addressed renewed speculation linking him with a possible return to Chelsea following managerial changes at Stamford Bridge. The former Chelsea midfielder has previously managed the club on two separate occasions but did not achieve sustained success in either spell.
Chelsea are enduring a difficult season in the Premier League. The club have failed to score in their last five matches and currently sit eighth in the table. Enzo Maresca, who began the season in charge, was dismissed in January. Liam Rosenior was subsequently appointed but was also relieved of his duties on 22 April after recording 11 wins, 2 draws and 10 defeats in 23 matches.

Chelsea are now actively searching for a new permanent head coach. During this period, Lampard’s name has been frequently mentioned in media speculation due to his long association with the club as both player and manager.
Lampard, however, has declined to engage with such discussions. He is currently focused on his role at Coventry City, whom he joined in November 2024. Under his management, Coventry have played 80 matches, winning 44, and have secured the Championship title, earning promotion to the Premier League.

Coventry are scheduled to face Wrexham today at the CBS Arena, where they will celebrate their Championship triumph with the trophy presentation.
At a press conference, Lampard reiterated his current focus. Responding to questions regarding both Chelsea and Liam Rosenior’s dismissal, he stated: “I do not wish to comment on Liam or Chelsea. I have experience in the dugout, and it would be disrespectful to judge situations without knowing what happens behind the scenes. I will leave that to the pundits. I am the Coventry manager and I am thoroughly enjoying winning the title and achieving promotion to the Premier League.”
He also acknowledged Chelsea’s current difficulties, saying: “They are undoubtedly going through a difficult period. As coaches, we understand what results can mean at such times. Chelsea have been a major part of my life, but that is their concern now. My full focus is on Coventry.”
Despite having a contract running until June 2027, speculation regarding Lampard’s future continues. Coventry supporters have also expressed concern over his long-term commitment given his historical ties to London football.
Lampard, however, has stated that no discussions have taken place regarding his future and has urged supporters to focus on the present.
He said: “In management, many things are beyond your control. I would encourage Coventry supporters to enjoy this special period fully. There has been no discussion about my future. I am simply concentrating on my job.”
Chelsea, meanwhile, are expected to continue the season under interim head coach Calum Macfarlane. The club’s immediate focus includes preparation for their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United.
