Lightning Strike Kills BSF Soldier on Indo-Bangladesh Border

A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier has been killed after being struck by lightning whilst patrolling the international border between India and Bangladesh in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The deceased, identified as 46-year-old Head Constable Vineet Kumar Dubey, was a seasoned member of the BSF’s 71 Battalion. Originally hailing from the Kannauj district in Uttar Pradesh, Dubey had been deployed at the Babura Ghat border outpost in Murshidabad to monitor border security.

The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday night during a period of severe weather characterized by torrential rain, gale-force winds, and intense electrical storms. Dubey was patrolling an unprotected, open stretch of the border in the Mithipur area, situated close to the zero line. Whilst performing his duties under the open sky, he was directly struck by a bolt of lightning, leaving him critically injured on the spot.

His fellow patrol officers acted swiftly to rescue him from the scene. He was initially evacuated to the nearest BSF camp for emergency first aid before being rushed to the Jangipur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Despite the rapid response, attending doctors at the medical facility pronounced him dead upon arrival.

This tragedy was part of a broader wave of severe weather that wreaked havoc across the region that day. Earlier on Tuesday, the Murshidabad district witnessed another devastating weather event in the Dhuliyan area. Four people lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries when lightning struck a boat crossing the Ganges River.

The incidents highlight the hazardous environmental conditions faced by border security personnel and local residents alike during the monsoon season. This period routinely sees volatile weather systems develop rapidly along the riverine and open stretches of the West Bengal border.
