The Indian Premier League (IPL) landscape is braced for a seismic shift in ownership as rumours of a sale for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) gather momentum. According to reports from ESPN, the franchise—home to cricketing icon Virat Kohli—has attracted interest from elite global investors, most notably Avram Glazer, co-owner of the Premier League giants Manchester United.

A Billion-Dollar Play
Glazer’s interest extends beyond the borders of Bengaluru; he is reportedly eyeing both RCB and Rajasthan Royals. Sources suggest a staggering bid exceeding $1 billion (approximately £800 million) is being prepared. This valuation signals a new era for IPL economics, potentially eclipsing the combined sale price of the Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, which were offloaded by the BCCI in 2021 for a collective 12,715 crore INR (roughly £1.2 billion).
The Jewel in the IPL Crown
Despite having waited 17 years for their maiden IPL title, RCB remains the league’s most formidable commercial entity. Following their recent triumph in both the IPL and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), their brand equity has skyrocketed, overtaking traditional powerhouses like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
IPL Franchise Brand Valuation Estimates (2025-26)
| Franchise | Estimated Value (INR Crore) | Success Record |
| Royal Challengers Bangalore | 3,279.27 | Current IPL & WPL Champions |
| Mumbai Indians | 2,950.12 | 5-time IPL Champions |
| Chennai Super Kings | 2,864.79 | 5-time IPL Champions |
| Kolkata Knight Riders | 2,600.50 | 3-time IPL Champions |
The Catalyst for Sale: A Tragic Turn
The decision by the current owners, the British multinational Diageo (operating through United Spirits), to exit the franchise is not purely financial. The move is shadowed by the “Bengaluru Tragedy” of 4 June. During the victory parade celebrating the team’s first-ever title, a stampede resulted in the deaths of 11 supporters and left over fifty injured. The Karnataka State Government has held the owners legally accountable for security lapses, leading to a complex and protracted legal battle.
A Legacy of Change
RCB has a colourful ownership history. Founded in 2008 by the flamboyant tycoon Vijay Mallya, the team was the face of United Spirits until Mallya’s financial collapse led to Diageo taking control in 2015.
If the Glazer family succeeds in their bid, it would mark a significant step in the “Americanisation” of cricket ownership, linking one of the world’s most famous football brands with the most valuable personality in cricket, Virat Kohli. For the Glazers, it represents a chance to pivot towards the lucrative Indian sporting market, which continues to show exponential growth.
