Allegations have emerged in Bangladesh’s political landscape concerning the parliamentary status of Abdul Hannan Masud, with claims that inconsistencies in his election affidavit could potentially lead to the cancellation of his membership of parliament.
The controversy was reignited following comments made by Rashed Khan, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who posted on his verified social media account on Monday. In his statement, Khan suggested that Masud’s parliamentary position from the Hatia constituency could be at risk if allegations regarding false or misleading information in his nomination affidavit are proven.
Khan further alleged that Masud, during a recent television talk show appearance, indirectly acknowledged discrepancies in the information submitted in his affidavit. According to Khan’s interpretation, the MP reportedly justified the inclusion of certain details on legal advice, allegedly to secure future advantages in business and taxation matters. He also claimed that although Masud had declared the absence of immovable assets, there appeared to be inconsistencies between that declaration and other public statements.
The BNP leader additionally referred to earlier remarks attributed to Masud in which he described financial hardship and reliance on loans to meet personal and political expenses. Khan questioned how such financial circumstances were reflected in the official affidavit submitted during the election process.
Under Bangladesh’s electoral legal framework, candidates are required to submit affidavits disclosing assets, liabilities, and other personal information. If any information is found to be deliberately false or misleading, the Election Commission is empowered to initiate investigations even after the conclusion of elections. Should such allegations be substantiated, legal provisions allow for the cancellation of candidature and, in serious cases, the annulment of a sitting Member of Parliament’s seat.
Khan also cited past remarks from the Election Commission indicating that affidavit information is subject to post-election verification and that appropriate legal action may be taken if irregularities are established.
At present, Masud has not issued any formal response to the allegations. Efforts to obtain his comment have reportedly been unsuccessful, leaving the claims unverified and one-sided. As a result, the matter remains within the realm of political accusation rather than confirmed wrongdoing.
A summary of the key allegations and their current status is presented below:
| Issue | Claim by Rashed Khan | Current Status |
|---|---|---|
| Affidavit information | Alleged submission of inaccurate details | Under verification |
| Talk show remarks | Partial admission of inconsistencies | Unconfirmed |
| Financial disclosures | Discrepancies in asset and debt declarations | Not independently verified |
| Legal consequences | Possible cancellation of MP status | Dependent on investigation |
Political analysts suggest that such allegations, whether substantiated or not, often intensify tensions within Bangladesh’s competitive political environment. However, they also stress that any legal or parliamentary consequences would depend entirely on formal investigation by the relevant authorities and due judicial or electoral procedures. Until such processes are completed, the issue remains an allegation rather than an established fact.
