Former Member of Parliament and renowned folk singer Mamtaz Begum has been granted bail by the High Court in three separate criminal cases, marking a significant development in her ongoing legal proceedings.
According to her legal counsel, a High Court division bench delivered the order on Monday following a detailed hearing of the bail applications. The court, after examining the submissions made by both the defence and prosecution, allowed her interim release on bail in all three cases.
However, the full details of the allegations involved in these cases have not been publicly disclosed at this stage, and the dates for further hearings in the lower courts are yet to be confirmed. Legal representatives indicated that the proceedings will now continue in the relevant trial courts, where the cases will be adjudicated in accordance with standard judicial procedure.
Mamtaz Begum was arrested last year during a late-night operation conducted by law enforcement authorities at a residential property located behind Star Kabab in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka. The arrest reportedly took place shortly before midnight on 12 May. Since then, she has remained entangled in multiple legal processes linked to different cases filed against her.
Beyond her legal situation, Mamtaz is a well-known public figure in Bangladesh, having built a dual career in music and politics. As a celebrated folk singer, she has enjoyed widespread popularity over several decades, earning recognition for her contribution to traditional Bangladeshi music.
In the political arena, she served as a Member of Parliament and participated in the country’s 12th parliamentary election, contesting the Manikganj-2 constituency under the banner of the ruling party’s ‘boat’ symbol. Despite her political profile and party backing, she was defeated in that election by independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed (Tulu).
Legal experts suggest that the High Court’s decision provides temporary relief but does not conclude the underlying cases. The judicial process will continue at the trial court level, where evidence, witness testimony, and procedural hearings will determine the eventual outcome.
The latest ruling therefore represents a procedural milestone rather than a final resolution, and her legal standing will depend on the progression of the ongoing cases in the coming months.
