Measles Deaths Rise to 294 Children

In the latest 24-hour reporting period from Saturday 8:00 a.m. to Sunday 8:00 a.m., a further 10 children have died in Bangladesh due to measles and measles-related symptoms, according to a bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services. Of these deaths, one child had a confirmed measles diagnosis, while nine deaths were associated with measles-like symptoms.

During the same period, 1,166 additional children were reported to have developed symptoms consistent with measles across the country. The confirmed case resulting in death was recorded in Dhaka. Among the nine children who died with symptoms, the geographical distribution was reported as follows: Barishal (2), Chattogram (1), Dhaka (4), Khulna (1) and Sylhet (1).

The updated figures were published in the measles surveillance report issued on Sunday by the health authority.

Cumulative situation since 15 March

Since 15 March, the cumulative situation indicates a continuing burden of both suspected and confirmed measles cases among children. The total number of deaths linked to measles symptoms has reached 244, while confirmed measles-related deaths stand at 50. Combined, the total number of child deaths attributed to measles and its symptoms is 294.

Over the same period, 40,491 children have shown symptoms associated with measles. Hospital admissions linked to these cases have reached 27,816. Of those admitted, 24,090 children have recovered and been discharged from hospital care.

In addition, 5,313 children have been confirmed as measles-positive since 15 March, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
