Measles-Like Deaths Reported Nationwide

Across the country, three children have died with measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, according to a routine bulletin issued on Monday (22 June) by the Directorate General of Health Services control room. The update forms part of ongoing surveillance of the country’s evolving measles situation, which continues to raise public health concern.

The bulletin clarified an important distinction: while three deaths were recorded in the past day among children showing symptoms consistent with measles, no deaths from laboratory-confirmed measles were reported during the same period. This indicates that although symptom-based fatalities are occurring, none have recently been verified as directly caused by confirmed measles infection.

According to official data, the broader situation since 15 March remains serious. Over this period, 590 children have died with measles-like symptoms nationwide. In contrast, confirmed measles-related deaths during the same timeframe stand at 93.

In terms of infection trends, both suspected and confirmed cases continue to place pressure on the healthcare system. Within the last 24 hours alone, 965 suspected cases were reported, alongside 160 confirmed cases. Since mid-March, cumulative figures have reached 93,755 suspected cases and 11,171 confirmed infections.

Hospital admission and recovery figures suggest that while the caseload is high, a significant proportion of patients are receiving treatment and being discharged. Since 15 March, 77,743 suspected cases have required hospital admission, of which 73,985 patients have recovered and returned home after treatment.

A summary of the available data is presented below:

IndicatorLast 24 Hours15 March – 22 June

Suspected cases96593,755
Confirmed cases16011,171

Health officials note that although a large number of suspected cases eventually recover, the persistence of symptom-based fatalities remains a concern. The gap between suspected and confirmed cases also highlights the challenges of timely diagnosis and laboratory verification during widespread outbreaks.

Public health specialists typically stress the importance of rapid case detection, prompt medical intervention, and strengthened immunisation coverage during such outbreaks. Children, in particular, are highly vulnerable to complications arising from infectious diseases like measles, especially in densely populated areas where transmission can accelerate quickly.

The Directorate General of Health Services has stated that it continues to monitor the situation closely across the country and is maintaining necessary healthcare response measures, including surveillance, treatment support, and coordination with local health facilities.
