Measles Surge Strains Hospital Capacity

A continuing outbreak of measles in Habiganj is placing increasing pressure on the district’s healthcare system, with patient admissions rising steadily at the 250-bed District Modern Sadar Hospital. Health authorities report that the situation has intensified over recent days, prompting heightened surveillance and emergency response measures.

According to hospital data, a total of 190 patients exhibiting measles symptoms have received treatment so far. Of these, 41 patients are currently admitted and undergoing inpatient care. Over the past 24 hours alone, 10 new patients have been admitted, underscoring the ongoing transmission within the community.

While 130 patients have made a full recovery and returned home, 19 individuals have required referral to higher medical facilities due to complications associated with the infection. Medical staff confirm that, despite the rising caseload, all necessary arrangements have been put in place to manage the influx of patients.

To prevent further spread within the hospital environment, an isolation ward has been established exclusively for measles patients. Access to this ward has been strictly restricted to minimise the risk of cross-infection among other patients and healthcare workers. Continuous monitoring and supportive treatment are being provided within this dedicated unit.

Health officials have acknowledged that the sudden increase in cases has created operational pressure on hospital resources, though they maintain that the situation remains under control. The Civil Surgeon of Habiganj has reiterated that measles, while highly contagious, is both preventable and manageable through timely immunisation and appropriate medical care. He has urged parents and guardians to ensure that children receive all recommended vaccinations without delay.

In response to the outbreak, a special vaccination campaign was launched in the district on 20 April. Health authorities are optimistic that the initiative will help curb further transmission and strengthen community immunity. Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted to educate residents about symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of early treatment.

Experts emphasise that controlling measles requires a coordinated approach involving vaccination, rapid case identification, and strict adherence to public health guidelines. They warn that gaps in immunisation coverage can quickly lead to outbreaks, particularly in densely populated areas.
