Mirsarai Deer Killing Sparks Outrage

A shocking incident involving the public slaughter of a Maya deer has triggered widespread condemnation in the coastal region of Mirsarai Upazila after graphic footage circulated on social media.

The incident reportedly took place on 11 April in the Tekherhat Badamtoli area under Ichakhali Union, within the vicinity of the National Special Economic Zone. However, the matter came to public attention on the night of 14 April, when a short video clip rapidly spread across various social media platforms, sparking outrage among local residents, environmental observers, and wildlife protection advocates.

In the footage, a deer is seen being restrained in a waterbody before a sharp weapon is used to slaughter it in broad daylight. Another individual appears to assist in holding the animal down, while a dog stands nearby. At least one other person is visible observing the incident. The person recording the video is later confronted by one of those involved, who is seen questioning and advancing towards the camera holder.

Locals reported that the coastal belt of Chattogram District once contained extensive mangrove and wetland ecosystems that supported diverse wildlife populations, including the Maya deer. However, large-scale land transformation linked to industrial development, particularly the establishment of the National Special Economic Zone, has significantly reduced natural habitats. As a result, wildlife sightings have become increasingly rare, and remaining populations are believed to be highly vulnerable and fragmented.

Forest officials suspect that the deer involved may have strayed from a nearby forest patch into human settlement areas, making it an easy target for poachers. Authorities believe the act may have been opportunistic rather than pre-planned, though investigations are ongoing.

Officials from the Mirsarai forest range stated that immediate steps were taken following reports of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that three individuals, reportedly local workers in nearby agricultural or industrial areas, may be involved. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Environmental groups and local residents have strongly condemned the incident, calling for swift legal action and exemplary punishment. They argue that such public acts of wildlife killing not only violate environmental laws but also highlight the urgent need for stronger enforcement mechanisms to protect endangered and vulnerable species.
