Modi Government Facing Backlash Over Ram Temple Donation Scandal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been plunged into severe political discomfort following allegations of multi-million-pound financial embezzlement at the newly constructed Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. A special investigative report published on Monday by the Qatar-based international broadcaster Al Jazeera exposed the burgeoning financial scandal.

The multi-faith state is witnessing immense public outrage after details emerged regarding the apparent misappropriation of public donations. At the centre of the controversy is the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, an independent body authorised to oversee the temple’s comprehensive management and financial assets. Earlier this month, Mahipal Singh, a former auditor for the trust’s accounting team, publicly flagged systemic irregularities within the religious fund.

Political Fallout and Arrests in Uttar Pradesh

Following these revelations, Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of Uttar Pradesh’s principal opposition party, the Samajwadi Party, fiercely accused the trust of mismanaging funds. He alleged that millions of rupees in cash and invaluable religious artefacts offered by devotees had vanished.

In a bid to control the escalating public resentment and intense political scrutiny, the Uttar Pradesh state government established a three-member high-level committee to investigate the matter. Concurrently, state police registered a formal criminal case, arresting eight staff members tasked with counting cash and handling valuable gifts. The severity of the scandal has also forced the resignation of the trust’s general secretary, Champat Rai, along with several other influential trustees.

The news has sparked deep anger among devout Hindus and global donors who funded the monumental project. Many benefactors are now demanding a transparent accounting of the gold jewellery and silver bricks they contributed. Ayodhya resident Brajesh Kumar stated that the trust officials had committed an absolute breach of public trust, effectively exploiting their deep religious sentiments.

Historical Leaders Denounce Mismanagement

The unfolding corruption scandal has drawn sharp criticism even from veteran leaders of the original temple movement. Santosh Dubey, a prominent figure indicted but later acquitted in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case, expressed his utter disgust at the situation. He remarked that cunning and greedy thieves are now running the sacred shrine, demanding maximum criminal penalties for those involved.

According to veteran political analyst Rasheed Kidwai, this corruption scandal will likely cast a long shadow over the ruling BJP’s prospects in the upcoming state elections. Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous and politically significant state, with regional elections scheduled for early next year. Having heavily subsidised and promoted the temple’s construction as a crowning achievement, the Modi administration may face severe political consequences for a scandal that directly compromises the religious devotion of its core electorate.
