Mustafiz Fitness Boost Ahead of Decider

Bangladesh have received positive news regarding fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the second One Day International against New Zealand, after earlier uncertainty over his availability due to a knee issue.

Mustafizur missed the opening match of the three-match series because of injury concerns. He was initially included in the playing XI for that fixture, but was withdrawn at the last moment. During the warm-up session, he experienced discomfort in his right knee. Following this, the head coach Phil Simmons was informed, and the team management decided not to field him.

Prior to the second ODI, there had been doubts regarding his recovery and potential return to the side. However, those concerns were eased following comments from his teammate Shariful Islam during a press conference. Shariful stated that Mustafizur is “quite well, Alhamdulillah, recovered,” indicating that the bowler’s condition had improved.

Shariful also confirmed that all 15 members of the squad are available and fit for selection, emphasising that final team selection remains the responsibility of the team management. He added that players remain prepared for any match assignment, regardless of the final playing XI announced by the coaching staff.

The first ODI of the series was won by New Zealand, giving the visiting side a 1–0 lead in the three-match contest. As a result, the second ODI has become crucial for Bangladesh, as defeat would result in an unassailable series loss with one match still remaining.

The second ODI is scheduled to take place on 20 April in Mirpur, where both teams will meet again. Bangladesh, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, will enter the match needing a victory to keep the series alive.

Mustafizur Rahman’s potential return is considered an important development for Bangladesh’s bowling unit, given his role in the pace attack. His availability for selection will depend on final fitness assessments conducted by the team management ahead of the match.
