Nesarabad Attack Causes Pregnancy Loss

In Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur, a pregnant woman has allegedly suffered a miscarriage following a coordinated attack linked to a dispute over a rape case, according to family allegations. The victim, Afsana (18), who was two months pregnant, was reportedly assaulted during the incident. Her husband, Md Ali Akbar (26), was also seriously injured in the same attack.

Afsana is currently receiving treatment at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. She is a student of a local school and college, as stated in the report.

According to the victim’s family, the incident occurred on Thursday (4 June) at midday when a group of 6–7 individuals, including Chan Mia, Rowsanara, Romana and Shimul, allegedly attacked Ali Akbar due to a long-standing personal enmity. When Afsana intervened to protect her husband, she was also allegedly beaten.

Afsana’s father, Md Shahidul Islam, stated that the dispute stems from a rape case filed in November 2014 involving Abdus Jabbar, the father-in-law of Afsana’s brother-in-law Anik. The case was filed after a five-year-old girl from his sister’s family was allegedly raped. He further claimed that the dispute between the two families has continued since then and that justice has not been obtained in the matter.

He also alleged that after the initial attack, the injured couple were assaulted again at Inderhat Bazar while being taken to hospital with local assistance. He claimed that Anik, Kaosar and local political activists were involved in the second attack. He further stated that although he contacted emergency services via 999, no assistance was received. The couple were later admitted to Nesarabad Hospital, where Ali Akbar was treated for three days, and Afsana was referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital after her condition deteriorated.

Shahidul Islam claimed that the assault led to the loss of his daughter’s pregnancy. He added that Ali Akbar is now in a relatively stable condition, while Afsana remains in a critical state.

A written complaint has been submitted to Nesarabad Police Station seeking justice and punishment for those responsible. However, the complainant alleges that no formal case has yet been accepted.

Several female eyewitnesses stated that when they attempted to protest during the assault on Afsana, they were threatened by the attackers. They demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved.

Afsana, speaking in a distressed condition, stated that she is seriously unwell, experiencing bleeding, and that her pregnancy has been lost. She also reported difficulty in speaking and breathing. Her relative, Sahinur Begum, stated that Afsana is not in a condition to speak and called for justice and prayers for her recovery.

Bolodia Union Parishad Chairman Saidur Rahman Said confirmed that he had heard about the incident but said neither party had formally informed the union council. He described the incident as unfortunate and called for a proper investigation and justice.

The accused, however, denied the allegations. Anik stated that he did not assault anyone and instead claimed that his parents were attacked. Chan Mia and Rowsanara also denied involvement in any assault on Afsana and Ali Akbar.

Police Inspector Sany Mazumder of Nesarabad Police Station stated that a general diary (GD) had been filed by the victim’s father Shahidul Islam. He added that the matter of miscarriage was not mentioned at that time. He further stated that upon submission of medical certificates and relevant documents, legal action would be taken following investigation. The GD has been sent to the court.

According to the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Dr Asaduzzaman Asad, the victim was admitted on 4 June in the afternoon in a pregnant condition. He added that on 6 June she suddenly developed bleeding and her condition deteriorated, after which she was referred for advanced treatment.
