West Bengal Expels 10,000 Undocumented Migrants to Bangladesh

The newly formed West Bengal government has repatriated at least 10,000 undocumented migrants to Bangladesh, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Tuesday. Delivering a statement to the state legislative assembly, Mr Adhikari confirmed that the Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted and returned the individuals across various sectors of the international boundary.

These mass deportations represent a sharp escalation in border enforcement following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral victory in the state last May. Within weeks of taking office, the administration launched a comprehensive, statewide drive to identify and remove undocumented cross-border arrivals. The policy marks a definitive departure from the approach of previous state administrations, which frequently clashed with federal agencies over border management and jurisdiction.

Detention, Reassurance, and Public Expenditure

Providing a breakdown of ongoing enforcement operations, the Chief Minister revealed that a further 1,800 individuals are currently being held across 12 newly designated detention centres across West Bengal. The rising number of detentions has sparked intense local debate. Seeking to defuse anxieties, Mr Adhikari assured legal residents that valid Indian citizens have no reason to fear the crackdown. The rights of genuine citizens, he insisted, will remain fully protected irrespective of religion, community background, or political affiliation.

Defending the economic logic behind the swift deportations, Mr Adhikari argued that prolonged detention imposes an unsustainable burden on the state exchequer. The government’s core policy prioritises immediate repatriation over long-term encampment. By reducing the fiscal strain of maintaining these detention centres, the administration intends to redirect saved public funds into critical social welfare schemes.

Hardening the Porous Frontier

The enforcement drive coincides with an aggressive infrastructure push along the heavily porous Indo-Bangladesh border. The state government has set an ambitious six-month deadline to complete 600 kilometres of barbed-wire border fencing. To expedite the security project, the state administration has already handed over 142.79 acres of land to the central BSF authorities, resolving long-standing land acquisition delays that previously stalled the project.

The heightened security presence and rigorous surveillance have also triggered a wave of voluntary returns. Mr Adhikari noted that a significant number of Bangladeshi nationals have chosen to cross back into their home country voluntarily, particularly through the Hili-Hakimpur border sector.

With bilateral discussions between New Delhi and Dhaka remaining sensitive over the issue of migration, West Bengal’s unilateral administrative measures are expected to intensify. As the border fencing nears completion, authorities anticipate a further reduction in illegal crossings, solidifying the state’s stringent new security posture.
