Background and Personal Details
Tasrin Akter was the wife of Shahadat Hossain, a resident of the Obaidullah Saudagar household in the Mahaluma Bazar area of the North Madarsha Union, Hathazari. She was the mother of a seventeen-month-old son and, according to medical reports cited by the family, was in the second trimester of her second pregnancy.
The deceased was originally from the Roja Ali household in the Gohira area of Raozan Upazila, the daughter of Mujibur Rahman and Rubi Akter. The transition from her paternal home to her marital residence in Hathazari had reportedly been marked by domestic friction, according to statements provided by her relatives.
The Incident and Medical Response
According to police and family sources, the incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, 8 May. Preliminary reports suggest that Tasrin Akter took her own life by hanging following a domestic dispute at her husband’s residence. Upon discovering her body, members of her marital household lowered her and transported her immediately to a local private hospital.
Due to the critical nature of her condition, she was subsequently moved to the emergency department of the Hathazari Upazila Health Complex. However, upon arrival, the attending physicians conducted an examination and pronounced her dead. The medical facility then notified the local constabulary as per the standard protocol for suspected unnatural deaths.
Allegations of Domestic Abuse and Investigation
While the initial report categorises the event as a suicide, the victim’s paternal family has raised serious allegations against her in-laws. Her parents and relatives claim that Tasrin was subjected to persistent physical and mental torture by members of her husband’s family. They contend that this sustained maltreatment left the young woman with no alternative but to end her life.
Upon receiving the report, officers from the Hathazari Model Police Station arrived at the health complex to take custody of the remains. The police subsequently dispatched the body to the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination.
Law enforcement officials have stated that while the primary evidence suggests suicide, they are not ruling out other possibilities until the forensic results are finalised. A definitive cause of death will only be established once the autopsy report is provided to the investigating officers.
Legal Proceedings and Official Statements
The Second Officer of the Hathazari Model Police Station, Nazmul Hasan, confirmed the details of the recovery on Friday evening. He stated that the police have initiated the necessary legal processes to investigate the claims made by the victim’s family.
“The body was recovered from the Upazila Health Complex and has been sent for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death,” Officer Hasan remarked. He further clarified that the authorities are currently gathering statements from both the paternal and marital families to build a comprehensive view of the domestic environment preceding the tragedy.
As of Friday night, no formal arrests have been made, but the police have maintained that they are following due process. The incident has caused considerable distress in both the North Madarsha and Raozan areas, as the community awaits the findings of the forensic investigation and any subsequent legal action taken by the Hathazari Model Police.
