Portugal Is Unimaginable Without Ronaldo: Martinez

Roberto Martínez, the head coach of the Portugal national football team, has once again lavished praise on the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, describing his influence on the team as nothing short of extraordinary. According to Martínez, Ronaldo’s presence on the pitch extends far beyond scoring goals; he shapes the very rhythm, strategy, and mindset of the entire squad.

Now aged 40, Ronaldo continues to compete at a high level in the Saudi Pro League, yet his significance to the national team remains undiminished. With a career tally approaching 950 goals, the forward is widely expected to captain Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which he has indicated will likely be his final appearance at the tournament.

Ronaldo made his senior international debut for Portugal in 2003, at just 18 years old. Since that debut, he has been an integral figure in the team for more than two decades, providing consistency, leadership, and inspiration. Under his guidance, Portugal claimed its first major international trophy, marking a new era in the nation’s footballing history.

Speaking on Canal 11’s popular programme, Total Football, Martínez highlighted Ronaldo’s tactical importance:

“When Cristiano is on the pitch, at least two opposing players are constantly occupied with him. The space he creates for his teammates is invaluable, and his experience in the penalty area is simply irreplaceable.”

Addressing ongoing scrutiny and criticism of Ronaldo, Martínez added:

“Everyone has an opinion about Cristiano, yet many fail to properly analyse the game. We assess all players equally, but at present, Cristiano’s mentality and professionalism are exemplary.”

Martínez also emphasised Ronaldo’s impact on both emerging and established players:

“The inspiration, sense of responsibility, and respect he instils in the squad are unique. He sets the standard for everyone around him.”

It is noteworthy that before Ronaldo’s rise, Portugal had never won a major international trophy. Since his emergence, the team has triumphed in the UEFA European Championship (2016) and the UEFA Nations League twice (2019 and 2023). Most recently, Portugal made history by winning the Nations League for the second time in June 2023, further cementing Ronaldo’s legacy as the defining figure in Portuguese football.
