A 70-year-old retired banking professional has died following a road traffic accident in Dumki উপজেলা of Patuakhali district, while a young lorry driver sustained serious injuries in the same incident. The दुर्घटना occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday (15 April) on the পশ্চিম side of the উপজেলা’s main gate, according to local sources.
The deceased, Harun-or-Rashid Khan, was a resident of Char Boyera village under Sreerampur ইউনিয়ন. He was the son of the late Giasuddin Khan, a former ইউনিয়ন chairman. After a long career in the banking sector, Mr Khan had been living a quiet retired life in his গ্রামের home.
The injured ব্যক্তি, Riyaz Howlader (24), is the son of Shamim Howlader from Tabirkathi area in neighbouring Bakerganj উপজেলা. He was reportedly driving a দ্রুতগামী lorry bound for Bauphal at the time of the incident.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, Mr Khan had gone out for his regular morning walk. While crossing towards the western side of the উপজেলা’s main entrance, he was struck by the speeding lorry. The impact left him critically injured at the scene. Moments later, the vehicle lost control and crashed violently into a roadside tree, leaving the driver seriously hurt and the vehicle badly mangled.
Local residents acted swiftly, rescuing both আহত individuals and transporting them to Dumki উপজেলা Health Complex. Upon arrival at around 8:00 a.m., the কর্তব্যরত physician declared Mr Khan dead. Given the severity of his injuries, the lorry driver was provided emergency treatment before being referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced care.
Dr G. M. Enamul Haque, the residential medical officer at the health complex, confirmed that Mr Khan had succumbed to his injuries before reaching the facility. He added that while immediate চিকিৎসা was administered to the driver, his deteriorating condition necessitated urgent transfer.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Selim Uddin of Dumki Police Station stated that the body had been taken into police custody. The deceased’s family has requested permission for burial without a post-mortem examination.
