West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph produced a remarkable bowling spell to secure his maiden five-wicket haul in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket, simultaneously matching a global record for the most wickets taken within a three-match bilateral series.
Prior to delivering his final over against Sri Lanka, Joseph’s statistical analysis stood at two wickets from his initial three overs. The complexion of his spell changed completely during his fourth and final over, in which he claimed three wickets in rapid succession. Joseph concluded the innings with career-best figures of 5 for 33, representing the first time across his senior professional Twenty20 career that he has claimed five wickets in a single match.
Joseph’s decisive performance in the final fixture capped a highly productive individual series against the touring Sri Lankan side. The fast bowler maintained high consistency by claiming exactly three wickets in each of the opening two encounters of the bilateral series, before registering his five-wicket haul in the decider.
By accumulating 11 wickets across the three-game span, Joseph equalled the international record held exclusively by Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan since 2019. Rashid established the benchmark during a three-match series against Ireland in Dehradun, returning figures of two wickets in the first match, four in the second, and five in the third.
Before Joseph’s feat, the second position on this historic global leaderboard was shared jointly by three bowlers who had achieved a maximum of 10 wickets in a three-match bilateral series. This trio consists of Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, Mark Adair of Ireland, and Hasan Mehmoud of Sweden. Joseph’s 11-wicket total has successfully elevated him past Mustafizur and his contemporaries.
While Joseph and Rashid co-hold the benchmark for a standard three-match series, the historical records for extended bilateral series remain considerably higher. The absolute record for individual wicket tallies in any bilateral T20I series stands at 15, an achievement shared by three international cricketers:
Jason Holder (West Indies): Claimed 15 wickets during a five-match home series against England in 2021.
Ali Dawood (Bahrain): Matched the 15-wicket milestone during a five-match series against Bhutan.
Shreyas Swaminathan (Sweden): Accumulated 15 wickets over an extended seven-match tournament against Indonesia.
