Tejgaon Road Blockade Ends After Protest

A road blockade in Dhaka’s Tejgaon industrial zone ended after nearly two hours when garment workers from a factory under Nasa Group vacated the main roadway, allowing traffic movement to resume.

The incident took place on Tuesday in the Tejgaon Industrial Area, adjacent to Love Road, where workers had gathered to protest over unpaid wages. Normal traffic flow was restored shortly after 12:30 pm once the demonstrators left the area.

According to police, the workers began their protest at approximately 10:15 am, when they blocked the main road beside Love Road and staged a sit-in demonstration. The action immediately halted vehicular movement on the affected stretch, and congestion spread to surrounding roads as traffic built up in both directions.

Officials from the Tejgaon Industrial Police Station stated that between 100 and 150 workers participated in the demonstration. Police personnel later intervened to negotiate with the workers and persuade them to leave the roadway. Following discussions, the workers withdrew from the protest site around 12:30 pm, after which traffic operations gradually returned to normal.

The protest caused significant disruption in one of Dhaka’s key industrial corridors, where roadways are regularly used by both factory transport and general commuters. Long queues of stationary vehicles were reported during the blockade period, particularly along connecting routes feeding into the industrial zone.

Police confirmed that the demonstration was linked to demands for the payment of overdue wages. No further escalation was reported after the workers left the site, and traffic conditions stabilised shortly thereafter.

The Tejgaon industrial belt, which includes multiple garment manufacturing units, frequently experiences high traffic volumes, particularly during peak operational hours. Temporary disruptions in this area can therefore affect movement across adjacent commercial and residential routes.

Authorities did not report any damage or confrontation during the incident. The matter was resolved on-site through engagement between law enforcement and the protesting workers, restoring order within the industrial zone.
